Imagine if this board existed in 1992

Let me follow up on the Aikman mobility thing, because this thing keeps getting thrown out there. People who must not have actually watched the guy play until he was later in his career want to imply that we DRAFTED an immoble QB, and that Aikman was a Bledsoe.

In Aikman's first year, 1989, he had 302 yards rushing on 38 attempts. That is 7.9 yards per attempt. There is no way you could get an immoble QB out on the run that many times, for that many yards, and at that average. In fact, in his rookie year they would PLAN QB draws for him.

That mobility didn't decrease until about 1995 . His rushing attempts and yards and average decreased because, as I said in an earlier post, he learned to read defenses, he had better protection, he STOPPED running so much. But the ability to move around in the pocket and get out on rolls was still there.

When Aikman began to look immoble, in my opinion, was 1995 and beyond. And to be honest I've even wondered if that 1994 playoff game against SF, when he played like a warrior in defeat, but got the stuffing knocked out of him in the process, might not have taken the largest toll on his back?

Too many people not seeing the forest because those pesky trees are in the way.

I have never seen dallas lose by a good margin without cowboys fans on a message board or in person throwing a hissy fit and blaming everyone but their mamma after a loss.

I know for a fact there were people out there screaming for the head of Jimmy, Aikman and Jerry Jones.

Heck people were actually calling for Steve B to be the starter, people were questioning the SMALL defensive philosphy of Jimmy Johnson. People were saying that Jimmy should go back to college. People were saying that Jerry Jones had no business running a football team.

Sit back and think that even if you had glorious visions of what the cowboys would become, you still probably knew of plenty of fans that were complaining.

I specifically remember one guy at the time saying this is what we get for getting rid of Landry and letting a country bumpkin buy the team. Said we were cursed because of that.

Of course most of that gets forgotten because we knew how it turned out later...but we did not know then.

I haven't forgotten any of that nonsense, but you knew that was just what it was, nonsense. You could see the FOREST, it was pretty plain to see if you were just willing to.

So I ask you, BP, what is the forest in this situation? Can you honestly tell me that you see this team as a championship team with the weaknesses we have?

-I can see the forest when it comes to the defense. I don't care how much people complain or say negative things about our defense. This is the closest thing to the BUILDING up of the 90's that I've seen since our Super Bowl years. Anyone who doesn't see that we have a bunch of young, growing, talent on this side of the ball just isn't watching.

HUGE improvement.

-But on offense what do you see? I see the most talented receiving group, AS A GROUP, that we have seen since the 90's, and if it is all clicking I think it could rival the early 90's.

-I see a young RB with potential in JJ, and a great compliment in MBIII, so I think we have a running back group that could be on a championship team.

-I see a DECENT offensive line. I don't see HORRIBLE. But I don't see championship quality there. I'm a just being negative?

-And I'm sorry, and I am no Romo apologist, but I don't think Drew Bledsoe, especially at THIS stage of his career, can survive the best defenses to lead us to a championship.

-I think our special teams can actually be outstanding if VJ will ever settle in like he was in Indy.

Now tell me where I'm so Jaded?

Having said all of that, THIS TEAM IS NOT 1992! It simply is not. That was a storm rising, and you could see it, feel it. This (2006) is a team that can be good, and maybe even in today's parity sick NFL pull something out of the hat to get farther than 2-2 would indicate. (I think we will make the playoffs this year) But to compare it to 1992 is just ludicrous, we don't have the QB we had then.

I'll finish by saying that if we had a franchise QB in his 4th year, I could see this team winning 2 SB's at least before the youth ran out, and the free agency moves emptied our cupboard again. I just don't see it with Bledsoe.

You are missing the point completely. It has nothing to do with comparing the teams (although your view of the 1992 team is based on what it did the rest of the season, not what it did up to that point), but on the likely reaction of posters here.

You are assuming they would have been rational in 1992, I say they would have been no different.

this might not have been here, but we had the AOL NFL forums then and had tons of people who posted regularly

the difference between now and then is the spin doctoring thats going on to explain why this team, loaded with talent is still mediocre on the field

in 1992 we accepted that loss at Philly for what it was...a young team that committed a few turnovers on the road...Jimmy even said after the game that while the loss itself was diappointing that we proved we could handle their defense and mvoe the ball on them...when we played them again in Dallas (a game I was at) we dominated them, then blew them out again in the playoffs

I honestly thought it was totally off

Aikman and Bledsoe? Please

Jimmy and Parcells? "what had Johnson got us in 3+ seasons"...well he got us from abysmal at 1-15, to near playoffs in 1990 at 7-9, to playoffs AND a road playoff win in 1991 to dominant, overwhelming team in 1992...whats parcells dont other than prove he can be mediocre?

that loss and the one we just had?

also was no comparison between the results of that defense and this years, so far

David

Exactly.

I'm insulted that anyone would make any attempt to connect Aikman with Bledsoe.

The long explanation you went on after admitting the nonsense is the trees...admitting there was nonsense was the forest.

It happened back then just as it does now is my point and anyone that says otherwise was either a prophent, super homer or just not around other cowboys fans at the time.

I remember Dr.Z picked us to win that year and I remember everyone saying the Cowboys were not there yet after that loss, how we were overhyped media darlings, because of the youth and such.
So I think the comparison of the fans and media reaction is spot on, now let's just hope the teams end up at the same place lifting the Lombardi.

Does he "skip and jump" or "press wild flowers" or even "go to the lavatory"? Or does he just "put on women's clothing and hang around in bars"? :laugh2:

Aikman's back problems started in the off season of early 1992. The team physcians told him it was nothing, but when he got a second opinion he ended up needing surgery. After that every thing probably took a little out of him and that 1994 NFC Championship game probably was a big one.
