Interesting draft. Overall, I like what we did. And I like that the team did not get cute with risky 2nd round injury or dope head picks or try to make some big splash trade up (a la Mo) or give away a high draft pick for a pricey veteran.

Like all drafts, it’s going to take at least 2-3 years to judge it, but it certainly has some interesting implications for the roster this year.

Let’s look at what the draft implications are...just a few thoughts:

1. It appears the team is not convinced Jaylon Smith is 100% reliable yet...maybe ever. The LVE pick immediately upgrades a weak position group.
2. Goodbye Chaz Green. Hallelujah. I would have cut him at halftime in Atlanta, but with the Connor Williams pick, Green is toast and our OL is solidified.
3. I like this new “WR by committee”. No big stars, but Michael Gallup is underrated, and has a chance to be a really good, physical receiver. Goodbye Switzer (so glad to see him go!- so underwhelming) and hello Tavon Austin. This receiving corps is already better than last year even without Dez.
4. The TE Schultz is already a really good blocker. If he can improve as a receiver, we may some depth at TE. Wouldn’t be surprised if we pick up a veteran after late cuts in Sept.

What else? What do you guys think?

1) Smith is more of a natural Will then a Mike. If Smith is 100% and his play improves, long term your LB corps is LVE at Mike and Smith at Will. Short term you have LVE at Mike, Lee at Will and Smith at SAM with a mix and match in subs. I wouldnt write Smith off yet

2)Maybe maybe not. But he is was down the depth chart right now. He is lineman #9

3) There is some ability at the WR corps, but I do worry. Especially since TE is a big question mark now

4) I think Shultz would be the favorite to start if we go into the season with what we have. Good blocking TE on a running team and good underneath receiver. I dont see him ever being a world beater, but I could see him becoming a rock in the run game and a 50-500 kinda guy

I agree.

Still unsure of Tavon Austin though. The guy has hands of stone and the last thing we need is a return guy with fumbling issues.

1. No, #50 missing time equals losses
2. Yes.....biggest disappointment from me
3. Our core WR were terrible last year
4. Maybe, believe Rico is going to explode

I think the WR group is actually going to be an upgrade. TE...we’ll see. I expect this team to pick up a veteran TE off waivers or via trade at some point.

1. I think Smith is better suited to being an OLB anyway, so I welcome LVE. Sean Lee is still the leader, as long as he's healthy.
2. I'll gladly hold the door open for Chaz Green to leave.
3. The "#1 receiver" thing needed to die - where did it get us this century? The game has changed, and it's about time we changed with it.
4. I like the Schultz pick. David Shaw said he's the best TE he's had, and I value his opinion more than guys like Todd McShay.

Rico? I just don’t get it. Why all the love for a guy who has never in 2 years with this team been able to play a single down in reg season? I don’t hate the guy, I just don’t see a football player there.

One other observation: Either Jerry was subdued with Johnny Walker Blue shots or Stephen has finally figured out how to control the old man’s penchant for stupid moves to get some splash notice. Bravo!

I'm thinking Rico showed more in last year' preseason games than any 'receiving' tight end that was available in the 4th, got a smart Stanford player whos a good run blocker and serviceble pass catcher, I think Dez was such a distraction not having him whining for the ball makes us a better offense with addition by subtraction, in Daks rookie campaign we were better when Bryant was injured as he spread the ball around, Dez got healthy and the offense was discombobulated

Sign Antonio Gates for 1 year, if needed for a pass catching TE.

Give me a Terry Glenn type reciever and we are good. Let Dak roll and move around and he can spread the ball around. USe Dak to his strengths this year.

AAAAAAAAnnnnnd again. Whats our offensive game plan. We run, we run, we run. Get that Oline to impose its will. Run, score, kick it off, take it from them, run it down their damn throats again. Run sets up the pass, keep them honest, keep the chains moving. you dont have to long bomb score, keep the chains moving, keep the D fresh. IMpose your will upon them.

The bottom line on this offense is I think it’s improved from last last year. Proof won’t come til September so until then it’s all speculation.

C'mon, a good game plan was designed and implemented by group action, analysis, and evaluations.

Group is just that...and is no way an indicator of Jerry incompetence or past.

There will now be a strong team interaction and receivers who can go vertical up field, not just jumping for a ball.

1. It appears the team is not convinced Jaylon Smith is 100% reliable yet.
How did you draw that conclusion? Everyone knew LB was a need especially with Hitchens leaving. The Cowboys wanted to move Jaylon outside and there was an obvious need for a starting MLB. So the Cowboys drafted a player that could be the best LB since Luke Kuechly. What does this have to do with Jaylon's injury?

My conclusion:

- Both Jaylon and LVE play 600+ snaps. Will rotate heavily.
- The jet sweep is back (Austin)
- I'm expecting more zone blocking in the run game
- Gallup, Thompson, Beasley, TW, Brown, and Hurns gives us a lot more variety
- A very different offense without Witten, a big question mark at TE...Rico?
- Still missing a centerfielder.

I think we'll trade another WR before the deadline for the 53 man roster.
1. Hurns
2. Gallup
3. Williams
4. Thompson
5. Wilson
6. Brown
7. Beasley
8. Austin (WR/RB)

I feel like there's one too many.
