Implications of this draft

Interesting draft. Overall, I like what we did. And I like that the team did not get cute with risky 2nd round injury or dope head picks or try to make some big splash trade up (a la Mo) or give away a high draft pick for a pricey veteran.

Like all drafts, it’s going to take at least 2-3 years to judge it, but it certainly has some interesting implications for the roster this year.

Let’s look at what the draft implications are...just a few thoughts:

1. It appears the team is not convinced Jaylon Smith is 100% reliable yet...maybe ever. The LVE pick immediately upgrades a weak position group.
2. Goodbye Chaz Green. Hallelujah. I would have cut him at halftime in Atlanta, but with the Connor Williams pick, Green is toast and our OL is solidified.
3. I like this new “WR by committee”. No big stars, but Michael Gallup is underrated, and has a chance to be a really good, physical receiver. Goodbye Switzer (so glad to see him go!- so underwhelming) and hello Tavon Austin. This receiving corps is already better than last year even without Dez.
4. The TE Schultz is already a really good blocker. If he can improve as a receiver, we may some depth at TE. Wouldn’t be surprised if we pick up a veteran after late cuts in Sept.

What else? What do you guys think?

I loved this draft.............the front office really hit a homerun this year.

I'm thinking Rico showed more in last year' preseason games than any 'receiving' tight end that was available in the 4th, got a smart Stanford player whos a good run blocker and serviceble pass catcher, I think Dez was such a distraction not having him whining for the ball makes us a better offense with addition by subtraction, in Daks rookie campaign we were better when Bryant was injured as he spread the ball around, Dez got healthy and the offense was discombobulated
I think Shultz is getting a bad rep with his pass catching ability over and over here on the Zone. I read that he was a 4 star recruit coming out of HS and was known for his receiving abilities but was not asked to be a guy who caught a lot of passes but rather be more of a blocking TE at Stanford. A team guy, learned to be a better blocker while at Stanford because that was the style of offense that the Cardinals played. Which should make him a more complete pro ready te. He also showed good hands when called to do so at Stanford. So we will see soon if Jarwin out of OK St or Rico out of Baylor or Swaim out of UT rises to the cream of the crop to follow in Wittens legacy in Dallas.

I feel the Cowboys are counting on Connor williams a lot ,maybe they think he can start day 1.disagree on Switzer,we never gave him a chance.

My conclusion:

- Both Jaylon and LVE play 600+ snaps. Will rotate heavily.
- The jet sweep is back (Austin)
- I'm expecting more zone blocking in the run game
- Gallup, Thompson, Beasley, TW, Brown, and Hurns gives us a lot more variety
- A very different offense without Witten, a big question mark at TE...Rico?
- Still missing a centerfielder.

I think we'll trade another WR before the deadline for the 53 man roster.
1. Hurns
2. Gallup
3. Williams
4. Thompson
5. Wilson
6. Brown
7. Beasley
8. Austin (WR/RB)

I feel like there's one too many.

Williams should stick because of guaranteed money but he may be gone anyway.

That's my thinking.

I think this contest is going to be purely talent based but I could put just about any of them 1st/last.

Tavon Austin?!?!!!???!?!?!?!?!

Implications are we'll be drafting WR, S, TE, DT next year.

"not convinced Jaylon Smith is 100% reliable yet.", --- more like "convinced Jaylon Smith is 100% not reliable".

Rico? I just don’t get it. Why all the love for a guy who has never in 2 years with this team been able to play a single down in reg season? I don’t hate the guy, I just don’t see a football player there.
so you're not falling for "The Legend of Rico"..... man.. he's a preseason super star against guy on the bubble to be cut...

How did you draw that conclusion? Everyone knew LB was a need especially with Hitchens leaving. The Cowboys wanted to move Jaylon outside and there was an obvious need for a starting MLB. So the Cowboys drafted a player that could be the best LB since Luke Kuechly. What does this have to do with Jaylon's injury?
Specifically, I drew that conclusion from listening to comments from round one draft night from Norm Hitzges and Bob Sturm from Dallas radio station “The Ticket”. They both said they heard that in conversations with “defensive coaches” on the team.

It wasn’t my original idea or conclusion.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think they wear the full uniform and pads during the preseason.
Correct....against third stringers and camp bodies that will never make an NFL roster. Rico has proven he’s a big athletic guy with “potential”. As the late great Darrell Royal used to say “Potential means you ain’t done it yet.”

How would you suggest a guy with potential gets from that stage to the "done it" stage? Is there a magic portal that skips Workouts, Practice, OTA's and Preseason?

He has fans because he's progressing and has had guys that have "done it" rave about him along the way, including Romo, it's not that controversial.

The bottom line on this offense is I think it’s improved from last last year. Proof won’t come til September so until then it’s all speculation.
Yes, it’s all speculation.

If our offense is to be improved Dak will need to be back to his Rookie level. And our 2nd ranked rushing attack will need to become a bigger force to carry a 26th ranked passing futility.

Overall I like the draft along with the trades we made and off season acquisitions.

I think we’ve improved the defense and reinforced the OL. The recieving core is biggest question and backup RB’s.

If Zeke has any injuries or struggles without a known backup or passing game our offense could revert back to what we saw when we had 3 games where we scored under 10 points.

Red zone scoring could be an issue for us if we can’t pound the rock without a proven recieving TE or TD manufacture like Dez.
