I was there yesterday - I live in Atlanta and have a few good friends who have Falcons seasons tickets. They invited me along knowing I'm a big Cowboys fan. We had an awesome all-day tailgate. Lots of Cowboys fans around. Then the game started...
First off, I expected a loss as soon as I heard Tyron Smith was out. Also Atlanta had their backs to the wall in a showcase home game.
What I didn't expect was another game where we had long stretches of extremely poor play. This has happened all too often this season - Denver, 2nd half vs Rams, Packers, etc. Good teams simply do not play bad ball as often as the Cowboys do.
Sean Lee - never has one player covered up 10 other players stink as much as Lee does. Soon as the scoreboard said he was out with a hamstring I knew the roof would cave in.
Coaching - it's all been said here but we have absolutely no answers when things so sideways. No adjustments. We have a head coach who will openly brag during game week that we are not scheming just lining up and beating the other guy. It's a stupid strategy (or lack thereof) when you are usually playing teams with equal or greater overall talent and key players are injured. Football IS about
Xs and Os.
Stadium - The new Atlanta dome is vastly overrated. it's huge and gleaming on the outside, impressive. Inside it's cookie cutter. Nice hi def board but that's about it. Falcons fans are quiet but talked serious trash once they had control of the game. This is a team who has never won a ring and a city who has 1 major sports championship EVER. Yet the fans get overly proud and obnoxious the first whiff of success. I told them they beat half a team and have nothing to brag about playing .500 ball. They are mediocre like most NFL teams in this declining league.
Conclusion - as I've said all year, we are a .500 team at best. Nothing has changed my view of that, in fact with Lee and Smith out likely longer 8-8 is aiming high. Also I hope Seattle cleans the Falcons clock next week.
