Spencer was a very unappreciated player as many would judge him just on his sack numbers. Back then, we heard that the Cowboys were one of the best against the run, where they rarely had to use extra men in the box to stop it. Spencer played a big role in that. He was so available that the team franchised him.

Name a edge player that was drafted in the 1st round.. that wasn't expected to be an impact edge rusher.
That's what you want first and foremost in an edge player, everything else becomes a added luxury..

I'm trading and moving up in the draft rounds to select DLaw because we think he will develop into something special as a pass rusher.
If he happens to become one of the better run defending DEs, that becomes a luxury that adds to his repertoire

You are correct, if you are drafting an Edge player in rd 1, you are expecting a quality pass rusher. Spencer never put up elite sack numbers, but he still was an effective player within our front 7. Wade Phillips scheme used him in a few different roles, where Ware was strictly a rusher, which could contribute to his low sack totals.

Or Wade began to use him differently because " Almost Anthony" simply wasn't getting home to the QB.

I was going to say the exact same thing, Wade probably saw that he was better in those other roles and had him playing more to his strengths. We remember that one season, the year they lost to the Vikings and Farve, towards the end of the season Spencer looked as good as Ware as a pass rusher, that was the only time in his career he looked like a high-level pass rusher. Again, he still was an effective player, just not an elite pass rusher.
