The defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs own the best record in the Western Conference and have won nine consecutive games. They seem to have risen to the challenge posed by conference competitors the Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks, teams that recently added high-profile players in trades (specifically to beat the Spurs).

"I don't want to go into the playoffs seeded sixth, seventh or eighth, because the teams are so much better," coach Gregg Popovich says. "It's a significantly more competitive situation. It's great for fans and hard on coaches."

Spurs center Tim Duncan also welcomes the challenge. "Everybody asks me, 'You've got four rings. What's your motivation to do it again?' " he says. "Your motivation is because you want to do it again. You've been there and you've enjoyed being on top of the league and there's no place like it."

well, the motivation was always to get some veteran their rings....first it was robinson, avery, sean elliot, etc. then it was steve smith, danny ferry, tony massenburg, big dog robinson, etc. and last year it was to win for fin. So now that we got stoudamire and thomas, that can be the motivation again. The spurs, were old players come to get their rings happens

Robert Horry must be in his own category.

This message is hidden because zrinkill is on your ignore list.

dang I love that.

I think that there are some other teams that will be more bloodthirsty this year. But there is no reason to count them out either. The hunger of wanting it will be strong again with the Lakers and possible the Mavs although they are quite hard to figure out.

Maybe not .... but I do not think Gasol can defend Duncan any better than Bowen can defend Kobe.

Its gonna be a great matchup ..... at least the Lakers and Spurs can both say they have done something.

Unlike those lesser teams. ;)

As much as I cant stand Kobe, Ill be rooting for the Lakers to beat the Spurs if the two ever face off.

Jordan and Barkley have said the same thing.

But I think Kobe is without a doubt the most gifted guy in the NBA.

I don't think he is the best .... just the most gifted.
