If words matter when we speak, which we all know they do, we all should stop saying shut down corner and start saying cover corner. I know a cover corner doesn’t sound as impressive, and it’s not, as a shut down corner, but it is by far more accurate to say, Deion is a great cover corner, rather than a great shut down corner. Then by your standard it’s impossible to be a shutdown corner.
A shutdown corner is a guy you put on the other teams best WR and know they are going to more or less take them out of the game. That doesn’t mean 0 catches.
You yourself, said a shut down corner is a guy you put on the other teams best receiver, and they are going to MORE OR LESS take them out of the game. You are describing a great cover corner, not a shut down corner. A shut down corner, by definition, completely shuts out the receiver, there is no more or less, shuts him out. He does shut him out!
Again, no one has been, or is, a shut down corner, but there have been some great cover corners.
Deion is the best cover corner in NFL history!
I started this thread agreeing that Deion was the only shut down corner in NFL history. I was wrong! As great as Deion was, and he was great, by definition, he was not a shut down corner. Just rewatch the NFC Championship game with Michael and Deion going head to head.
