In the NFL, waiting is losing. And JJ's doing it again

In the National Football League if you are a GM, HC or some other kind of decision maker, knowing what you want better not take too long. Leaders must be proactive, well planned and decisive to get a competitive advantage. In short, in the NFL waiting is losing. Jerry’s infamous quote about “being comfortable with ambiguity” may work well in the business world, but in the world of professional football, ambiguity is stupid.

It was obvious all last off-season that for some dumb reason Jerry Jones waited…and waited….to do what effective NFL GMs know well in advance needs to be done early and decisively. If you are going to sign a player you already have, the sooner you do it, the better it is for the other big decisions you must make. Waiting on some mystical something to happen is destructive to any team working competitively against 31 other teams vying for talent and advantages.

The 2024 season was torpedoed before the ball was even kicked off in Cleveland in game one. Jerry waited until the last minute to sign two expensive players he knew in March he was going to sign. Whether you like signing Cedee or Dak, refusing to get their contracts done early in order to clear some cap space was destructive. It placed all pressure on the draft because no help could come from anywhere else.

So here we are in December, 2024, already eliminated from the playoffs with the entire current coaching staff on expiring contracts, your team’s most talented player Micah Parsons on the precipice of his second contract, and once again, “Mr. Ambiguity” and his giggling son are apparently sitting on their hands. Both have indicated in radio interviews, they have made no decisions nor are they planning to do anything until the season’s over.

Maybe they don’t want McCarthy back and are already planning for their next HC. (I seriously doubt that) But if they are planning on bringing Mac back, why not get the deal done now so players who are heading into FA already know who’s going to be here. If they plan on re-signing Parsons, what’s the hold up? Every single day that passes will cost more and more for his services. Why wait?

So the questions remain for a front office that looks completely flat footed and lazy.
  • What kind of team do you want to build for 2025?
  • Who would be the best head coach to lead this team in 2025?
  • If you want Parsons here long term, why wait to get a deal done? (If he’s not in your plans, what do want in a trade?)
  • What positions does this team need to upgrade in order to make a deep playoff run in 2025?
If they plan on waiting until summertime to once again answer the above questions, 2025 will already likely be a failure. Why? Because in the NFL, waiting is losing! How long before Jerry and Giggles learn this?

He will tell you how complicated it is extending such a massive deal to Parsons.

He will tell you there is only so much pie to go around.

He will drag this deal out and it'll be an excuse not to sign free agents, just like he did last year with Dak and CD.

This is true. If you are late evaluating what you have at talent and don't upgrade you lose. The cap essentially forces you to constantly evaluate what you have at every position and how you can upgrade if possible to a better cheaper situation.

In late 2008 he said that he shouldn’t have to invest top resources into the OL because Hudson Houck is the highest paid OL coach in the league.

Five months later they took Tyron Smith in the top ten. Jerry does that also. Reactive? Absolutely….and there’s no plan.

Same with letting Murray walk and saying theres no value in paying big money at RB, then drafting Elliott top five the next year.

All over the place.
He keeps getting proven wrong, but then has no idea how to fix it aside from 1st round draft picks.

And good stuff!!!

And a nonfootball guy as GM means you are not going to be able to do that.

I don't think most realize just how bad Jerry is at his job.

Knowing that DB was thin to start the season got worst during Blands long preseason injury you see Stephon Gilmore at Minn 7 million not a back breaking contract for vet DB . Instead Dallas went with Carson 5th rounder , Played like a 5th rounder too, hope he improves next year .

Anyhow DJ Reed of the Jets will cost more then 7 mill but worth it while Diggs is out for the future. Team him with Bland in 25 .

Prolly not affordable w/ Dak/Diggs/Lamb taking up 114 mil out of the 250 something mil salary cap. And then we have Parsons coming up and we'll get lucky if he takes 30 mil/season.

Reed in the 11-12 mill range , Takes DB off your draft board teamed with Bland

How many times can you start threads with long posts saying essentially the same thing?

Jerry and Stephen suck. We get it. This has been known to everyone for quite some time.
I haven’t figured how many times…maybe 27? 41? Saying the same thing….Hmmm…Wasn’t aware I was doing that in every thread. Guess I need to add more, LOL!

Seriously, all threads here live only as long as others want to read and interact with them. You are always free to disagree or just ignore. Either way I appreciate your input. No hard feelings from me.

I don't think most realize just how bad Jerry is at his job.
Not to mention how bad the people he has surrounded himself are at their job.

Good post. But when are you guys going to realize that everything is about Jerry. He loves keeping the attention on him. He'll come out with something else to hit the wire after he announces this decision. Of which he already knows. Keep the attention on "me"-"Jerry" for a few more weeks. Personally, I could care less what this "bum" announces anymore...

All threads are repeats. Sometimes from different angles, but still repeats.

I for one want you to keep driving this home no matter what. This is the humongous elephant hanging over our head and there is not much likely to change as long as Jonestard is in charge.

Wait until their annual Jones family cruise during the beginning of free agency. I have given up on change. At least the television crews are complaining about having to cover the Cowboys all the time. That is a start. It’s up to the season ticket holders.

So he made the decisions he made last year to not look like an idiot?

He failed miserably.
Not as big of an idiot .

For example if he had resigned MM immediately or paid Dak the highest contract fresh off choking in playoffs he would have looked even more idiotic.

I hate Jerry, he’s too arrogant and stupid to learn from his mistakes, he keeps doing the same crap that costs his team financially (with the cap) and on the field. He thinks as long as the team is profitable, that’s all that REALLY matters. Freakin clown.
