In Will McClay, Cowboys will be covered

McClay was the pro personel guy when we finally started finding on the street free agents like Laurent Robinson and Frank Walker that could actually help us in season.

McClay has been a player, coach and scout. He has a varied background and seems to have far outperformed his peers.

How anyone can not be jazzed that the team finally has a personnel guy who actually earned his promotion is beyond me.

McClay has done some good things, but the jury is still out on whether he can handle this additional responsibility he has been given.

On a more positive, I'm just going to pretend McClay is the Cowboy's GM and not Jerry. It's not exactly true, but it makes me feel better.

It's just like any other position in the real world. You do a good job, someone in upper management notices then you get promoted. I for one am rooting for the guy and his staff to succeed. If they hit our team gets better.

Some say it was easy to find players out on the street and put them in and see if they stick. Yes we had to do that last year multitudes of times during the season and frankly a lot of them didn't stick. Marvin Austin, Drake Nevis to name a few. Jimmy Johnson did the same thing back in the day, Plan B free agents came thru valley ranch in bunches to see if they could make the team. Jay Novacek and John Gesek was the best. But isn't that how it works, assemble enough talent thru the draft, UDFA and free agency and you can build a team.

The article didn't say he was going to be the savior, it just said that he was a hard worker and would leave no stone unturned. He has to be judged in two or three years to see if his body of work does something for this team.

Dr. Oz said yesterday when you can't get a full nights sleep you should take ten minute cat naps.

His promotion didn't surprise me. After Ciscowski's confrontation with Jerry over Floyd during the draft last year I knew something like that would happen.

lol

this isnt the real world you are talking about though

jerry, stephen, jason, ....

there isnt a single person in the cowboys upper management who did not get there because of sheer nepotism

If that doesn't work you can always pretend that GMs don't matter.

Let me know how it goes.

One day a book will be written on how McClay wrestled control of the Dallas Cowboys away from Tom Ciskowski.

And I will buy that book.

Sadly, you might be right. That might be the only reason this happened.

This caught my eye:

"There is not a magic formula," Gray said. "It's just good, old-fashioned bust-your-*** hard work and lots and lots of tape. Lots of calls. Lots of research. Just looking at thousands of players until you find one you think fits for you.

Try as you might, you cannot replace the necessity of the GM doing this as well. He is going to make the final call; he should be doing this work.

various:

some of you guys crack me up.
not sure how you find the willpower to get out of bed in the mornings.
if someone told you how a family dog protected a baby from a bear you'd be all "it was just a little brown bear, not a grizzly".

mcclay: if you didnt read the article do not post your whiny crap in the thread.
he went to work as a coach immediately after his playing career ended.
he's been in football via AFL, XFL. NFL. He's played, coached and scouted.
he's been a coach of the year, won 3 titles and consistently given high marks.

THEN he got scouting jobs and promotions here.
but, but, but everyone gets laurent robinson credit...
who gives a crap? do they also get credit for the 20 other guys we've brought in through our pro scouting dept that have helped us?

room for growth:
what are you numbskulls talking about?
do you somehow foresee jerry living forever??
mcclay is 30 years younger than Jerry.
I'd say he could be the actual post-Jerry GM....
but even if he maintains the exact same job he has now how is that bad for this team??
has he not outperformed the people in his position before him?

he only got promoted because tom c made jerry mad.
one of the most childish whines i've ever read.
if tom c had players rated incorrectly enough to get overruled come draft day he had betterhave been right about those rankings... HE WASNT.
was tom c not responsible for some very soft drafts? wasn't he the guru over the mo claiborne is the next deion debacle?
btw, mcclay was promoted BEFORE last season's draft as well.
havent we been told mcclay PERSONALLY scouted and championed holleman, travis frederick and other excellent football players who were tremendous value picks? IN HIS ONLY SEASON as a college scouting guy?

of all the things cowboys fan have to cling to for hope will mcclay is at the top of the list.

I don't think it was the confrontation. It was the fact that Ciscowski had rated Floyd very highly on the board without consulting the DL coach.

I think the reason McClay is getting attention is because he appears to be functioning as the GM.

Ciscowski always seemed to be a draft guy only.
