By the way, we blitzed 27.7 percent of the time on pass plays (151 out of 545). San Diego blitzed 41.9 percent of the time on pass plays (251 out of 599).

We also had 36 times when he blitzed and our opponent ran the ball (for an average of 4.28 yards). San Diego had 103 times when they blitzed and their opponent ran the ball (for an average of 4.34 yards).

So we blitzed a total of 187 times, while San Diego blitzed 354 times.

Ware's a fun player to have on this team. Merriman may go on to have the better career, but Ware looks like he'll be chasing his coattails fairly tightly for the majority of their careers. Second to Merriman's DROY; one Pro Bowl to Merriman's two; etc.

I've seen the Moss-Ellis debate surface in the Merriman-Ware ones. Well, it took Ware just two seasons to get the Pro Bowl berth that has eluded Ellis his entire career. Not that it matters all that much, but in terms of perception it absolutely does. Just imagine if Ellis was a Pro Bowl defensive end his second year in the league. Don't think it would have changed some opinions on how we did in that draft?

Anyway, that's a debate for another time.

I'll stick to my first comment: Ware's fun to watch.

Agreed. Ware is my favorite player on this team, so I'm always looking to see what he does at the snap of the ball.

As for the Ware/Merriman comparisons, time will tell. I see room for improvement with Ware. As Rack, below, and many others have stated, a good, creative DC can only benefit his play. On the otherhand, I think Merriman has already peaked. Just my opinion, now. I mean, he'll continue to be a defensive force and earn pro-bowl honors etc, but I really don't see him getting much better than he already is.

Lets give it another year or two and see what happens.

No, but he benefits from being on a team that blitzes a lot more and generates more pressure from other players. Merriman's teammates had 182 pressures, while Ware's teammates had 121.5. Merriman also gets a lot of his sacks as a result of pressure created by other players. On almost all of Ware's sacks in his career, there was nobody else even close to the quarterback.

If you put Merriman on the Cowboys, his numbers would go down. If you put Ware on the Chargers, his numbers would go up. Which one would be considered better is up for speculation.

Call it whatever you want to call it. There are 3 down linemen and 4 linebackers.

They run a defense with 4 down linemen. They ran the 3-4 a couple of years ago, but switched.

Suggs, though, sometimes lines up as a DE, other times as a LB. But they have 4 down linemen.
