Initial 53 Formatted

Only two can be recalled. Looks like one of them would have to be shut down for the season.

Noah Brown is still 22 years old and Terrence Williams is very likely gone after this season. Brown is the obvious choice in my mind, but I also don't think they IR Travis Frederick. Even if he misses 6 games, its better to keep him inactive and gain those two starts.

Something I like to do every year is evaluating the overall age on the roster and the players' long term status.

1. LS L.P. Ladouceur (37) - has been perfect for a very long time, set to be a free agent after this season
2. LB Sean Lee (32) - great player who struggles to stay healthy, free agent in 2020
3. FB Jamize Olawale (29) - versatile player, set to be a free agent after this season
4. WR Cole Beasley (29) - looking to rebound after down year, set to be a free agent after this season
5. P Chris Jones (29) - solid player, free agent in 2022
6. WR Terrance Williams (29 Sept 18th) - good, not great, free agent in 2021
7. K Brett Maher (28/29 Nov) - will be under a little scrutiny, RFA in 2021
8. DL Tyrone Crawford (28/29 Nov) - plays wherever needed, free agent in 2021
9. WR Tavon Austin (28) - brings needed juice, how often will it show up? set to be free agent after this season
10. DL Datone Jones (28) - team seems to like him, blah career to date, set to be a free agent after this season
11. C/G Joe Looney (28) - picked a good year to finally get in shape, free agent in 2020
12. G Zack Martin (27/28 Nov) - franchise guard, free agent in 2025
13. LT Tyron Smith (27/28 Dec) - franchise tackle, free agent in 2024
14. G Kadeem Edwards (27) - bubble player unlikely to stick, RFA in 2021
15. C Travis Frederick (27) - franchise pivot, free agent in 2024
16. LB Joe Thomas (27) - decent looking reserve, free agent in 2020
17. S Jeff Heath (27) - looks good at SS, will play FS while Xavier Woods is out, free agent in 2020
18. S Jameill Showers (27 Sept 6th) - on injured reserve for season with blown ACL, possible camp invite next year but this may be it
19. WR Allen Hurns (26/27 Nov) - hoping to stay healthy and be productive, team holds option to extend deal through 2019
20. RB Rod Smith (26) - Zeke's caddy, set to be RFA after this season
21. DE DeMarcus Lawrence (26) - out to prove 2017 was no fluke and get paid crazy cash, set to be free agent after this season

So, we currently have 20 players on the active roster age 26 or older, meaning there are 33 players who are age 25 or younger.

6 players are due for unrestricted free agency, though Tank will get tagged again if an extension isn't reached (could get ugly) and Rod will be a RFA.

Crawford, Williams and Hurns are likely to come back next year, but each has potential obstacles.

Edwards may not even last to the opener and the new kicker is under a wee bit of pressure.

For comparison, on November 24, 2016 the roster had 38 players age 26 or older.

Only 8 of those players still have a star on their helmet: L.P. Ladouceur, Sean Lee, Cole Beasley, Chris Jones, Terrance Williams, Tyrone Crawford, Joe Looney and Zack Martin

Who is going to return punts?

RICO GATHERS with his Rico Plants ...

My guess is

-Frederick, Noah Brown, and Datone Jones get IR'ed tomorrow.

-Darius Jackson and Caraun Reid get brought back on

-The team searches waivers for an OL to back up Fredbeard (Jonathan Cooper maybe?)

I don't think Frederick goes. If he does, it's pretty bad news given the uncertainty of his recovery. It's saying they just don't have hope for a quick recovery, which tells me the reasonable expectation is he doesn't make it back this year.

I wonder about bringing guys back, like Darius and Reid. They'd have to clear waivers, but once they've done that, why put them on the roster instead of the PS? Leave the roster spots for more players who can help us. I don't see either of those guys active on gameday until injuries thin the herd.

Cooper is a no brainer. He might be a better *starter* for us today than Williams.

I'm liking Thomas at the LB position.

Dude plays like he's 300 lbs and fast.

Pain Train is comin'.......

Swaim is the starter....... deservedly so, IMO.

Robinson at S intrigues me.
I would like to agree, but honestly I just have not seen enough.
I believe I watched Robinson make 1 really good tackle this preseason, but I admit that I have not been as interested this year, and usually quit paying attention after the first half.
Curious what you think about the kid.

They kept 7 LBs each of the past 3 seasons. I didn't go back further.

Only Wilson seems to be SLB only.

Covington played mostly SLB but he was injured for the 1st half or more of camp.

Noah Brown is unique in that he was the best blocking WR in college that I've seen.

You did a nice job of predicting the 53 last week x-man.

Biggest surprise was the cut of Bailey.

I thought Thompson was going to make the cut.

I figured that if Rico was going to make the cut, then the arresr would not change that.

DT Ross is a surprise; although his playing time and depth chart position in the last 2 games foreshadowed it. He is a super high effort guy but I didn't see much talent.

I thought Reid and Jihad Ward looked more talented at DT than Ross; although Ward is not really ready.

I thought they would keep 5 at DE with Tapper as that player. I guess they see Crawford as the 5th DE option.
I would have liked them to keep Ried. He is a 1 Tech here, but he has some 3 Tech traits. I could see him being similar to Terrell McClain. Him and Woods both on the roster could have strengthened the 1T spot. Neither would likely be plus players, I think they would have complimented each other amd given us some options for packages

I was thinking that too, but it made me wonder, if they're not worried about IR'ing him for the season, why not just do it now? They would then have an open roster space to keep someone else right now.

Odd initial roster frankly.

6 DTs, although Jones will likely get IR’d. Only 4 CBs? I still don’t get why they needed to keep White. He was not a risk of bein snapped up IMO.

Brown was a surprise too.

Over Ross for sure

Ross bigger, anchors better in goal line packages?

He looked better than Ross.
