This Sunday’s opening game vs the Browns will mark the 33rd time (including the playoffs) these two teams have met all time. To the surprise of many fans, the Browns hold the edge all-time 18-14. The browns won the last matchup in 2020, beating us 49-38 at AT&T.

Here are some interesting facts many Cowboys fans probably don’t know:
  • Until 1970 when the old AFL merged with the NFL, the Browns were part of the old NFL. In 1970, the Browns along with the Steelers left the NFL and became part of the modern AFC.
  • From 1960-66, the Browns and Cowboys played in the same division, then known as the “Eastern Conference” and the two teams played each other twice a year.
  • The Browns won 4 NFL championships between 1950 and 1964.
  • The Browns and Cowboys have played each other 3 times in the playoffs, all in the 1960s, and the Browns lead 2-1.
  • The Cowboys are 7-3 against the brownies in the last ten matchups.
  • The Cowboys are 5-13 all time playing at Cleveland, but have won 2 of their last 3 games in Cleveland.
On a personal side note, 60 years ago when I was just 6 years old, my Dad took me to my first Cowboys game in person. It was at the old Cotton Bowl and the opponent that day was the Cleveland Browns. Even though the Cowboys lost they became my favorite team. It would really be cool to watch the Cowboys win at Cleveland 60 years later. Go Cowboys!

Jason Garrett grew up in Cleveland wanting to be just like Brian Sipe. Garrett picked No. 17 as a player, because that’s the number Sipe wore for the Browns from 1974-83.

And no truth to the rumors that they were named after Jim Brown.. the legendary RB. It was Paul Brown, the original owner.
@Bobhaze

Named after Paul Brown.

Rumor...Jerry is considering changing The Dallas Cowboys to The Dallas Joneses...

I didn’t show up until the mid-70s, but one day about 25 years ago I sat down and learned the history, season by season.

I was surprised to know what a rivalry that was at one point.

The Browns were the franchise with the highest winning percentage in the NFL for more than two decades. In fact, the Browns only had one losing season it their first 27 years.

They did not have a losing season until their 11th year in 1956. It would take another19 seasons before experiencing their 2nd losing season in franchise history.

Their winning percentage in the first 29 seasons of their existence was over 73%.

In 1970, the Dallas Cowboys went to the Super Bowl for the first time. In order to accomplish this, they had to win a critical regular season game against the Browns.

This particular game was the 2nd to last of the regular season. The Cowboys won 6-2. two weeks later they would win their 1st playoff game that season against the Lions, 5-0.

Jim Brown had already retired but Leroy Kelly was a very capable replacement.

Wow that’s kind of cool. Do you think you’ll get a little choked up during the game. I think me I’d get a little choked up cuz the game would remind me of that memory. I root for the Cowboys every game but I hope they pound them extra hard for you and your dad.

Good stuff Bob. One notation.

From 1960-66, the Browns and Cowboys played in the same division, then known as the “Eastern Conference” and the two teams played each other twice a year. Basically there was no playoffs as the Eastern winner played the Western conference for championship.

When the merger was announced the NFL broke up into 4 divisions with 2 in Eastern and 2 in Western conferences establishing the playoffs.

Browns were in Century division and Cowboys in Capital division both in Eastern conference but only played each other once in regular season. However they both won their divisions all 3 seasons in 67,68 & 69 and faced each other in playoffs.

Another tidbit interesting to me: The Cowboys first playoff win in its storied history was against Cleveland in 1967 when we blew them out 52-14 at the Cotton Bowl.
Yea, I guess the playoffs in NFL didn’t officially begin until 1967. Before the 2 divisions in each conference was established in 1967 there wasn’t a “ playoff “. The eastern conf champ played western conf champ for NFL title.

The Cowboys first postseason game was against the Packers in 1966 NFL title game in the Cotton Bowl. Assuming we aren’t counting the Playoff Bowl in 1965 against Colts.

In 1967 as Capital division champ we of course played the Browns as Century division champs in Cotton Bowl before advancing to NFL title game in rematch in Green Bay or famed “ Ice Bowl”.

Unfortunately we faced the Browns blowing us out in the divisional round in 68 & 69.

The Playoff Bowl which pitted the loser of the Divisional round those last 3 seasons in old NFL. Total meaningless consolation exhibitions.

The Playoff Bowl or as Lombardi called it the “ chit bowl or a loser bowl for losers “ was established in 1960 to add another national tv broadcast at end of season to compete with new AFL. It originally pitted 2nd place team from each conference.

That was the beginning of the famed Doomsday Defense in 1970 which had 2 shutouts along with only giving up 3 and 2 points in other games .

And still holds the record for fewest points given up in a Super Bowl in 1971 over Miami 24-3. They also only gave up 3 points in NFC champ game vs SF.
