This yr wasnt even a team record for penalties.

However it is the most in a season since- 1999...and guess who the HC was then? Chan Gailey, the guy some of you have been foaming at the mouth over. We had 136 penalties that season. We had 119 this season.

Also as fyi, the yr we hired Gailey we improved offensively from 22nd in pts and 20th in yds (1997) to 9th in pts and 8th in yds. However in his 2nd season we dropped to 11th in pts and 16th in yds.

Also, number of penalties has almost no correlation with winning percentage in the NFL.

I know, I even posted that in response to someone a few days ago who said thats why we sucked, because of penalties. Several of the best teams in football this yr are at the top of the league for most penalties.

Wasn't Gailey's 2nd year when Irvin went down 3 games into the season? Could that have had something to do with the decline in offensive production? Of course, Gailey had Jeff Ogden in the game over Irvin on 3rd down that year also.......

It was, but we had signed Rocket Ismail that yr as well.

And Gailey's game day coaching was terible. Irvin sitting on the pine on obvious passing downs (for lesser players)...basically designing a pass offense that avoided the entire middle of the field...very little intermediate to deep stuff despite having a QB with a great arm...

and he was pathetic at Ga Tech, those people couldnt wait to see him gone...

people forget this stuff

The Cowboys were able to put it all together in one year and were consistent in all phases of boneheaded mistakes: Penalties, -11 turnover ratio, poor ball control, bad playcalling, embarassing field position....combine that with injuries in key positions and well, you have your 2008 Dallas Cowboys.

Say what you want about Ernie Mills, but he almost died out there when he ruptured his intestine in a game. Well, something like that.......

That reminds that year when Jerry was interviewed at the draft he was trying his best to convince the world that Billy Davis would be an adequate #2 receiver so they were not going to look at WR in the draft. I think that was the same year they passed on Moss. That kind of puts his current insistence on sticking with Wade in perspective. It is not out of the ordinary for Jerry to look at the world and see what he wants to see regardless of what is really happening. :bang2:

Yep and I remember when he went down in that '98 game against Seattle that was pretty much the end of the season, the offense was never the same without him.

I don't think Chan gets a fair shake around here. He was in cap hell. As was Campo.

Sadly its not the NUMBER of penalities its when and where they happen. And we seem to be able to draw the laundry just when it really matters the most.
It all comes down to the discipline problem.

Not to argue but I'd like to see the numbers for this. It just defies common sense. Like I said, I'm not saying you're wrong, but this goes against what one would think. They certainly don't help anything or correlate to winning.

There have been more than a few games where drives were killed by penalties. Or, we gave the other team a first down because of penalties, which resulted in us losing. I can't see how there's almost no correlation with winning percentage.

It's gonna take quite a ballsy fellow to A. Get hired by Jethro in the first place, being the ballsy fellow he is. and B. Turn this franchise around inspite of Jethro. I don't see Chan as that man!!!!

Yeah, Aikman actually trusted Mills. He made more than a couple of plays throwing the ball to Mills. I remember Redball hitting Mills for a deep TD against the Commanders also......

This year penalties are different, repeat penalties and stupid penalties.
I mean Flosmell false starts and holding every game? Packman unsportsman like conduct for a late hit out of bounds when we are trying to get back in the game?
In all seriousness has Flosmell EVER played a game where he did not get a false start and holding penalty? A Flosmell HatTrick, holding penalty, false start penalty and get beat by the defense for a sack.

Also I do not think injuries were any part of the blame for this years results.
Felix Jones loss was not a big deal and I think Marion Barber is better anyway. MB 111 and Romo were playing in the end and when we needed to win they were playing and pretty healthy.
Now the Patriots may be able to use injuries as an excuse but not us.
