Interesting OL Stat...

From 2008-2010, no team drafted fewer offensive linemen than the Cowboys.

And in 2010, the Cowboys had the oldest offensive line in the NFL.

And wouldn't you know it, there was a 2011.

This is just one more thing that fires me up about the Wade Phillips era. Going by the thinking that the head coach has more say, when it comes to the Cowboys' draft, than most people realize, it seems like he took a Buddy Ryan approach, and put a lot more stock into drafting defense, and ignored the OL. I know you can't put it all on him, and we had a pretty good line when Wade first took over, but I find it interesting, that since Garrett has taken over, we've almost completely overhauled the OL.

Here's a good one:

Red Zone TD, 2011
Jacobs/Bradshaw: 18
Jones/Murray: 2

It's sickening to look at that. Just a pathetic performance.

The good news is those backs get to run behind Mackenzy Bernadeau and Nate Livings now.

So Air Garrett works even when we stink on the ground.

Hopefully that changes, and we can throw 33 TDs and run for 14 or more.
er

......I watched some real positive tape on Bernadette from a few of the Carolina games: he's got good feet and technique: pretty powerful too, so I am hopeful he'll help the run game, but Livings: don't know a THING about him so I'll reserve judgement. Everyone on here hates him but, I doubt they have really watched the guy play.

There was no other choice. We'd made the bed for ourselves from 2008-2010, then spent 2011 lying in it.

According to Mark Schlereth (ESPN), the Cowboys ranked 27th in rush offense when it was 3rd down and 3 or less (2011).

I like bringing in the youth (26) and upside of Mackenzy Bernadeau. That signing is very intriguing because of his youth, athleticism, size, and power. Kyle Kosier had 40 starts before he arrived in Dallas. Bernadeau has 20 career starts, but he does possess power. Kosier was not a power player. Bernadeau turned 26 in January, and Kosier signed with Dallas at 27 and turned 28 in November. I think Bernadeau has a great opportunity in Dallas, because he should destroy the current competition on the roster (Nagy, Arkin, and Costa). Garrett said that this guy was 325 pounds, too. Anyway, I like this signing. It could be a big bang for your buck if he hits. It's a low risk, high reward move, imo.

Now, go draft:

DeCastro
Konz
Zeitler
Brandon Brooks

:)

Love the take on things. There is a potentially strong upside to Bernadeau, no matter the Bengals fans chatter about him being a scrub or the Cowboys fans head scratching. And I like your draft options. Any of the top 3 will do in my book. Don't know much about Brooks.

every time some gomer claims we do not need to do much with the O line because we scored a lot of points needs to read this thread. Not being able to run at all when it counts makes us one dimensional when it counts.

and of course watching Romo run for his life most of the time and get worked the rest should be obvious to everyone

This kinda screams for DeCastro, doesn't it?

Big fan of this entire thread. We need DeCastro or an equivalent player. I'm not sure why some are blind to our shortcomings on offense.

Definitely. Just an average OL would have gotten the Cowboys into the postseason.

Do you feel we have at least an average o-line now, with the pick ups of the two guards?

A: Simple. Those shortcomings can -->all<-- be attributed to Tony Romo. :scram:

OL was a huge factor in our losses, at least as much as pass defense.

ROFL. Talk about cherry picking stats.

The Giants were terrible running the ball most of the year and their winning late coincided with health on defense when they played very well versus the pass.

When talking about the ineffectiveness of our 2011 running game and solving it going forward I think its a bit unfair to ignore the signing of Lawrence Vickers.

Probably not, no. But I could certainly be wrong. Maybe Arkin, Nagy or Kowalski emerge. Or maybe these two new G's flourish in Dallas.

It's almost like we went from one extreme to the other. Prior to Garrett being HC, the OL had been left alone to wallow in mediocrity (maybe even less than that) for so long it was disgusting.

I for one was glad to see Garrett finally make changes to it. However, I'm not sure he wanted make all those changes at once. I think he probably wanted to keep Gurode for one more year but Gurode forced his hand. Either money or lack of effort...maybe both.

Anyway, I'm just glad someone finally has the balls to make changes. Garrett will not stand pat with less than 100% effort and he will churn this roster until he gets it right. I really believe that.

If this doesn't work out, maybe we can try targeting players with a higher pedigree.

I ask, because I have read many of your posts, and while I disagree with you more than I agree, I also respect your opinions and can always have a "I get where he's coming from" mentality with them.

I'm not necessarily sold on the two guards we picked up, but I will trust JG that he has done his homework, that they are better than what we had.

I think competition for the 3 interior positions will prove to be a great building block for all of the guys.

I am a little disappointed we did not pick up a veteran center

I do think our oline will improve from last year, jump 6-7 spots in the ranking

Yeah I hope DeCastro will be there for us at 14. I think that would just about complete this OL. I think center will be improved with some lowlife scoundrel from God knows where!

It is difficult to have "high pedigree's" at every position though, don't you think?
