Simeon not the answer

With Michael Strahan away from camp and pondering retirement, the New York Giants plan to bring in free agent weakside end Simeon Rice on Wednesday for a physical. He ranks 13th on the all-time sack list with 121. Strahan ranks eighth with 132.5.
But Osi Umenyiora, New York's Pro Bowl end on the weak side, isn't sure how Rice would address the team's problem at strongside end.
"What position is he going to play here?" Umenyiora asked. "He's not a run player. Everyone knows he's not a run player. That [left side] is where they run the football. The only option would be to move me over there -- and I'm not moving over there. There'd be a little bit of a situation here if they decide to bring him in."
Stay tuned ...

I wonder if Osi's comments have anything to do with the fact that he and Strahan share the same agent?

Strahan is coming back, he's just posturing. I look for him to be back within a week. No one turns down 4 million bucks a year.

Now, that's the type of selfless team commitment I've come to expect from the Giants.

The way things have gone up there, I'm not sure how Coughlin handles anything. Granted the Gnats played better late than we did, but it seems to be non-stop drama in Gotham. Good to see that things haven't changed much.

Mike Garafalo has a bit more from http://blog.nj.com/ledgergiants/2007/07/osi_refuses_to_play_nice_with.html:

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Maybe Michael Strahan has finally addressed his possible retirement and the impending visit of free agent DE Simeon Rice. Maybe he just used Osi Umenyiora's mouth.

Umenyiora, who spoke reluctantly when asked about Strahan the other day, suddenly has a lot to say. Especially now that Rice will be arriving in the area tomorrow.

Here's the best of what he -- or perhaps ventriloquist extraordinaire Michael Strahan, who has spoken to Umenyiora every day since the start of camp -- had to say:
John O'Boyle/The Star-LedgerI'll bet Umenyiora wouldn't be able to talk while Strahan is chomping on a PB&J sandwich.

Shot #1, fired when Umenyiora was asked about Rice's visit and what kind of impact the news had on the Giants' locker room: "Nobody's talking about (Panthers DE) Julius Peppers. I mean, Simeon Rice is an outstanding pass rusher, but that's what he is. So I don't think it resonated with us that Simeon Rice is coming in. We have good players in here; we'll be all right."

Shot #2, a bombshell about Rice's reputation as a pass rusher who doesn't like to play the run: "I'm not going to go so far as to call him what a lot of other people have called him. I'm not going to go that far. But I'm not sure. They say he's not the best run player and I guess people gave him that reputation for a reason."

Shot #3, Umenyiora's calling the defensive line's version of "shotgun": "But as far as him coming over here, I don't know where he's going to play. I know he can't play left defensive end because they run the ball there. He can't play right defensive end. Well, he's been a right end. ... (But) I'm not moving to the left side. Absolutely not. Not even a question."

Shot #4, more on his staying at right end: "I'm a right end. I've been successful at right end. I don't feel the need to move to a different position. That's kind of crazy."

Shot #5, saying he'll be a team player but for the team, not a player: "I'm not going to move to left defensive end if they sign Simeon Rice, is what I'm trying to tell you. If the team asks me, 'Okay, we need you to move to left defensive end because we need you at that position,' I will. But I'm not going to move to that position because Simeon Rice is coming in. I won't do it."

By the way, Umenyiora said Strahan's mulling retirement isn't a ruse.

"He's not joking," Umenyiora said. "It's going to take him a while to really make that decision, but he's contemplating it."

Osi's a nice guy and all but I still don't believe it.

Strahan wont retire. He needs the money after that divorce. But how funny would it be if Strahan and Tiki retired in the same offseason?

Yet ANOTHER Giants player disrespecting the coach, the organization.... Coughlin is in for a long year.... could be a midseason fire or quit.

Inmates continue to run the armpit asylum in New Joisey

It would not come as a surprise. I had the feeling last year that Coughlin had lost his team and if the G-men get off to a bad start I could see this getting really nasty.

Yeah... last year you heard and saw more disharmony.... but the truth of the matter is... Coughlin NEVER had this team.... they never bought into "him"..... they started crying when he was hired, set early meeting times etc....

Coughlin - take the money and run.... thats all folks.

Giants will not be relevant in the division this year.

Not a Giants hater, but that's how it looks to me too. More than any other team in the NFL I can think of, I think the Giants' 'inmates run the asylum'.

They did last year and now with Coughlin as a lame duck, things will be even worse.

Guys in that locker room have their own agendas and I don't see much in the leadership department.

I think things have the potential to get really ugly in New York this year.

True but they did get off to a 6-2 start last season and as long as the team was winning he at least seem to have them under control but when they hit the skids and went 2-6 that team really imploded with guys ripping into each other as well as Coughlin
