Interesting Stephen Jones quote on Ware

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones says the team is "getting the lay of the land" with DeMarcus Ware's contract.

The same is true of Miles Austin. "Obviously, DeMarcus had a hell of a career, but when we’re in the cap situation that we’re in and obviously counting as much as he is obviously you have to look at it along with several others," Jones admitted.

Sure looks like Stephen is talking in the past tense pertaining to Ware's career. DeMarcus HAD a hell of a career? Interesting.

Speaking in the past tense about Ware's career may be nothing more than posturing tactics in anticipation of the first round of negotiations. The last thing the front office would want to do right now is give the impression that they're planning on Ware remaining a Cowboy indefinitely.

It's time to move on from Ware. IF he checks out medically, sign Spencer to a 1 yr $5 mil deal and draft your other end.

Broadus says that Spencer can barely walk. It doesn't look good for him to play anywhere let alone here.

I have yet to read anything positive regarding Spencer's recovery.

I hear you but Broaddus has no idea what's going on with Spencer's recovery. It could be doctor's orders that he stays off his feet as often as possible to help with recovery. Broaddus is just going by what he sees at VR, I assume?

True.

Clean house. Start over.

We probably will.

Broaddus has specifically said that Spencer is walking like an old man and doesn't appear ready to do anything football-related.

That's interesting, Stephen.

Hey, with the "cap situation that we're in", do we also have to look at the guy running our cap?

Just promise me you'll talk to yourself in the mirror.

This is what is newsworthy. Not that Ware's career is coming to a close, but that the Cowboys "cap genius" is tacitly admitting that the cowboys have a "cap situation."

Seems a long ways, at least for him, from the "always makes me chuckle," comment he made a couple of offseasons ago:

Jones wouldn't say how much room is under the cap.

"'Room' always makes me chuckle," Jones said. "That's irrelevant. What we have on a given day really doesn't relate to what you're ultimately going to have and how you're going to manage. All I can tell you is we can make the moves that we need to make, hopefully to get prepared for the draft, to make us the type of football team we need to be."

Gee, had they done this in the first place...................

I get that "if" he checks out medically, but he would be one of the last players on my mind to even think about doing any kind of deal with at all. Talk to him in the late summer and see where he is.

At least Ware has two functional knees.

He and his father have already admitted they have a "situation" but they have both stated clearly it will always be around because they are so "aggressive".

Golly, we are lucky to have two executives like them.

days before the cap was in place I would say keep him and let him retire a Cowboys like a Randy White or a Bob Lilly but in todays football with caps in place I can't see Ware remaining with the team. I like him as a man and as a player but it is impossiable to justify the contract at this stage. I do think if he gets healthy he can have a few more productive years but I can't see it in Dallas at this cost.

Anthony Spencer is unfortunately likely to be done playing professional football.

We basically need to either get Ware to agree to a reduction in salary in order to be able to have him as a stopgap for a year or two, or let him go and draft a defensive end in the first round.

Selvie will likely start at SDE next year because he was good enough for the cost.

With the way Stephen is talking about this situation, I think you can likely expect Ware and Austin to be released outright. I imagine we're waiting until after the combine where they will talk to agents as well as start to solidify the draft board.

We have a new nucleus on this team - Dez Bryant, Tyron Smith, Sean Lee. It's time for a "changing of the guard" from the Parcells era, imo. The only way Ware should stay at this point is with a salary cut.

I don't disagree and as I said if cap was not an issue then Ware staying would not be a problem but reality is the cap is in place and Dallas is way over the cap and only way to get it in order is by releasing him. I doubt Ware is going to take a cut in pay and if by chance he did I still think it would not be enough of a cut to help our cap out.
