Interesting Stephen Jones quote on Ware

I don't disagree and as I said if cap was not an issue then Ware staying would not be a problem but reality is the cap is in place and Dallas is way over the cap and only way to get it in order is by releasing him. I doubt Ware is going to take a cut in pay and if by chance he did I still think it would not be enough of a cut to help our cap out.

He would likely go on to be productive somewhere else, and that's fine. I would rather take another 10 years from someone else at DE than only 2 more productive years from Ware and then still needing to find a young replacement...and who knows what the cap situation will be then.

This also is more of a concern about the 2015 cap than the 2014 cap. If we release Austin and Ware this off-season, we'll have close to $20M in cap space in 2015, I believe. Which is huge for the upcoming extensions for Dez, Tyron, and maybe DeMarco.

I agree. I like both guys but I just can't see the Cowboys paying out that kind of cash at this stage to either player.

Anthony Spencer is unfortunately likely to be done playing professional football.

We basically need to either get Ware to agree to a reduction in salary in order to be able to have him as a stopgap for a year or two, or let him go and draft a defensive end in the first round.

Selvie will likely start at SDE next year because he was good enough for the cost.

With the way Stephen is talking about this situation, I think you can likely expect Ware and Austin to be released outright. I imagine we're waiting until after the combine where they will talk to agents as well as start to solidify the draft board.

I don't know why, but I don't think Spencer is done. Microfracture surgeries have high success rates in younger patients, not to mention he's a professional athlete. He'll likely have to get the procedure done again, if not multiple times in the future before he decides to get a knee replacement. I think he'll play again though.

I think there is a chance with spencer but I can't see it being a big contract.

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones says the team is "getting the lay of the land" with DeMarcus Ware's contract.

The same is true of Miles Austin. "Obviously, DeMarcus had a hell of a career, but when we’re in the cap situation that we’re in and obviously counting as much as he is obviously you have to look at it along with several others," Jones admitted.

Sure looks like Stephen is talking in the past tense pertaining to Ware's career. DeMarcus HAD a hell of a career? Interesting.

I'm wondering if this is a misquote -- he said almost the exact same thing about Austin, past tense and all.

Speaking in the past tense about Ware's career may be nothing more than posturing tactics in anticipation of the first round of negotiations. The last thing the front office would want to do right now is give the impression that they're planning on Ware remaining a Cowboy indefinitely.

Exactly.

It's just posturing.

Sorry Ware, you had a few shots at a Superbowl. Time to move on. That's the life of the NFL.

Given our prowess at negotiating and our current situation, I do not think DeMarcus or his camp is sweating it.

No... I doubt they are paying much attention to what is said in the press.

What's said behind closed doors will determine how much sweating occurs.

Ware said his agent, Pat Dye, has not been approached by the team yet about their plans, and he did not want to discuss specifics. Those discussions could come next week at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Ware said. “I’m going to let the guys run the numbers and handle that. My mentality is that I’m going to do what I need to do to try to help the team out the best I can where they’re going to win and I want to win.

“We need guys here to be on the team for next season to help me out, to help us out, so sometimes you can’t think about a whole bunch of money and then not have anybody there. You need somebody there by your side, a defensive tackle, a defensive end, a wide receiver. You need to figure it out because the time is now. We need to win. That’s what I get out of playing. I play hurt, bruised up. Some guys don’t play, but I still get out there and play because I don’t care about anything else.”

Re: Stephen's comments on Ware: ouch. Re: Ware's comments, that sounds pretty hopeful, actually.
Re: Spencer: I don't doubt he's done; we'll have to see. But, if he is done, it's not going to be because Dr. Broaddus saw him walking like an old man in the hallway. I don't doubt he's still hobbled, but I put no faith in Broaddus' ability to diagnose an injury status by passing any player in a hallway.

It's time to move on from Ware. IF he checks out medically, sign Spencer to a 1 yr $5 mil deal and draft your other end.

I'm pretty convinced that 5 mill could be better spent. Spencer's knee is very questionable. I would not bet anywhere close to that figure on it.

Exactly. Ware said he would take a pay cut and the follow day retracted it, no doubt after getting an earful from his agent. The Cowboys said in so many words they weren't looking to cut Ware but are doing so now because negotiations are underway. I put these comments in the same pot at their pre-draft comments on which prospects they like. They are talking to send a message, not to communicate.

Isn't sending a message "communicating"?

Even if a "message" is being sent, it is likely not that impactful. Ware has the leverage, about 16 million's worth.

Last year I didn't see how they'd get Free to take a pay cut, but they did. I like our chances.

Oops, did I just say that?
