I am really excited and think that the Cowboys (including Jerry) did an awsome job in replacing our interior Oline. That was the weak link last year and they did everything they could to fix it. I believe that this will not be our weak link this year. Something else may get us but not the interior Oline.

If Leary pans out it'll be huge. Grab another guard in the top two rounds next year and you're in business for a long time to come.

Definitely.

In fairness, a lot of this has been in the works for a long time. Now, let's see if they can actually block in a game that counts.

I don't think they need a top pick on a guard, especially a RG. You can see if Waters could play one more year after this one, then draft a college-proven (not a small-school project) in the 3rd or 4th round. This year with Larry Warford was the perfect opportunity. He would've been a solid 3rd round RG.

Eh... I'd rather draft a sure thing in the first or second. Screw "potential" or "serviceable" at this point. Just fix it.

It will be nice if tony doesn't get the pocket shoved right back into his face for a change and hopefully, those 3rd and a foot will be a little more manageable.
It would be sweet to be able to gain a yard when everyone in the stadium knows you are gonna run the ball.

I'm starting to get the feeling that Fredrick has a chance to be the most important rookie in team history before he even plays his first game. A huge statement to make I know, maybe too big. But this team has a real shot at something special, and if Fredrick is the primary reason why the biggest weakness on the team is completely transformed in one offseason, then it could just be the truth.

But you can't spend a 1st or 2nd every year on an OLman. We spent a top 10 pick on a LT and a late 1st on a OC. We seem to have gotten lucky on a UDFA LG. We spent a 4th rounder on a RT who we developed over a few years. We have another UDFA RT who may or may not pan out but will at least be a serviceable swing tackle. As much as everyone wants to hate all our OL decisions, no team spends a 1st rounder on every OL position. We do need a replacement at RG since Arkin will probably never pan out, but that doesn't mean we have to spend another 1st. DE, DT, S, QB (Romo is getting old) are all more pressing needs.

Since the draft Jerry has been absolutely pounded each and every day for not upgrading the OL. Well, the season opener is 4 days away and the entire interior of the OL has new starters and each should provide an upgrade from the players they replaced. Imagine how happy Mr. Romo is now.

I disagree with this strategy mostly because OG is not a premium position and we need to keep within the confines of the salary cap.

The problem becomes you have to start projecting your lineup in the future and that means replacing guys like Spencer and Ratliff next year while having very little cap space to do so. This likely means drafting two DL high and probably hoping Crawford makes a great comeback. I see the DL as a much larger need than OL and one which likely cannot be filled without using premium draft picks. Now re-signing Hatcher and hopefully a great recovery from Crawford and development from some of the guys Marinelli has brought onto the team will help but right now I think picks 1 and 2 go to the DL next year.

It thus continues to be imperative to find low cost alternatives at non-premium positions for the next while.

I would love to see that. I'm probably not alone.

You are right. DL is a huge need going forward. But there are too many self proclaimed football experts on here who think that "real" football knowledge dictates the need for OGs. So your post will be lost amongst the masses

We need to go best pass rusher in the 1st round next year. Whether that's DE or DT. Guys like Geno Atkins have shown that you can get an elite interior pass rusher. We don't need to spend our 1st on an OLman every year. LT and C in the past 3 years is a lot. No OL in the league is made of five 1st rounders. We drafted 3 of our 5 starters--two in the 1st round, one in the 4th. Also, 4 of our 5 starters are relatively young and have only ever been with Dallas (Leary was a UDFA pickup). We've done a better job of getting our own young, cheap talent at OL than people give us credit for.

You must be thinking of another team.. this organization supposedly doesn't get that you "win in the trenches" and does nothing to try to fix the OL.

High round guards pan out so much more than high round DTs. I'd literally never spend a first round pick on a DT. They bust too often and their years of productivity are too limited. A guard, on the other hand, can be productive for 10+ years for literally every snap played. The DT position needs to be rotated and the impact on the game of your average DT is negligible. I put the position in the same category as running back. Just keep a steady rotation of middling players and you're fine.

I don't care in what order next year, but 1st & 2nd round, DL & OL, BPA at either position.
Unless they go QB for the future which I doubt. That's probably in 2015 or 2016

Depending on where we wind up in the draft I think we should probably take a run at a DE. After that I'd probably say OT, because you can have an OT bust and frequently still be a success at OG, but if you have an OG bust you usually have to street the guy. But in the long run I do hope that the team keeps on following their BPA trend that they've been doing for a few years. I don't want to get into the trade down this year, I have no clue what that was. I do think the rest of the draft showed a BPA trend to it.
