This week the Cowboys made a move that not many fans noticed when they signed free agent WR LaRon Byrd.

Byrd was signed by the Arizona Cardinals as a rookie free agent in 2012 after going undrafted. In his first year, Byrd played in 4 games, recording just 1 catch for 8 yards. Then, in 2013, Byrd suffered a concussion, putting him on the IR list for the remainder of the season. I spoke with LaRon over the phone earlier and he assured me that his concussion is nothing to worry about.

“I’m good man. I wouldn’t have signed if I wasn’t healthy. I’ve been healthy since last season, but there are certain rules and regulations when it comes to concussions. But yeah, I’m 100% healthy.. No, I’m 110%.”

Many fans might think of Byrd as a “camp body”, someone to step in and give the other wide receivers some rest during practice. However, there is no denying his potential. Physically, Byrd looks the part of a star NFL wide receiver (6’4″ and 220 pounds). LaRon also has some good speed, strength and dependable hands. However, his physical gifts aren’t the only things he has going for him. Byrd’s determination to improve and winning mentality are exactly what you want in your players. He’s what we, in Cowboys Nation, would refer to as a “Garret guy.” With intangibles like those, you can bet that the Cowboys see him as more than just a “camp body.”

LaRon told me that one of his teammates in Arizona played a big part in helping develop his tremendous work ethic. That teammate is none other than future Hall of Famer, Larry Fitzgerald.

Is this another Will McClay find? We need to find out now so the anti Garrett and anti Jerry people will have someone to give credit to if this team actually hammers out a winning season.

A year's worth of training with Larry Fitzgerald as an examble is not bad at all. That guy is super legit, and a bona fide RKG to boot. Hopefully Byrd shows up and shows enough to be worth keeping. If not, at least he gets his picture taken in a Cowboys uniform.

Expecting nothing but hoping for the best. This signing was worth it just to see what he can or cannot do. But as long as he is on this team I will not trash him until he gives me a reason too.
