Dallas Cowboys wide receiver
Terrance Williams is the
"next guy up" for injured wideout
Dez Bryant.
The former Baylor standout has been the No. 2 to the talented playmaker since entering the league in 2013, but is now poised to be the new No. 1 for quarterback
Tony Romo.
“These are the moments you train for,” Williams said, via
ESPN Dallas. “I don’t have any pressure. I’ve just got to go out there and run the plays that Coach calls and Tony gives me. Stick to my fundamentals and play fast, that’s what got me here.”
This offseason, Williams got plenty of work in at the X receiver position with Bryant not participating in the offseason workout program. Bryant was holding out of OTAs and minicamp because of his unhappiness with his franchise tagging. That just meant more work and opportunity for Williams and other Cowboys receivers to get better.
Williams has gotten plenty of reps at the X receiver position, and head coach
Jason Garrett doesn't seem to be too concerned with any switch.
"I don't know that there's a significant difference,'' Garrett said on playing X or Z receiver. "Each of those guys have a route tree within our offense that is probably pretty similar.
"It's an age old discussion in the NFL that the best receiver, does he always play X or Z? Jerry Rice, arguably the greatest football player of all time, was a Z. So anybody who says your best guy always plays the X, we always bring up the Jerry Rice example.
"Different offenses use guys in different ways. Most of the routes that we run with the X we run with the Z, so I don' think it's a huge difference.''
Last season, primarily as the Z receiver, Williams caught 37 passes for 621 yards and eight touchdowns. Bryant caught a whopping 16 touchdowns. What can Williams do help make up for the loss of Bryant who's expected to be out anywhere from four to 12 weeks?
