iPhone 5S vs Samsung Galaxy S4

I am 12 months overdue for a phone upgrade. I still use iPhone 3GS which I bought 2.5 years ago.

Not sure what to buy this time.

I do have latest generation iPad as well.

I am noo tech savy

All I do with my phone is this

1) Check mails and surf web
2) Take pictures.

With my new phone I would like to also listen to music. My current 3GS has only 8GB space so I can't really load any songs to it. I also want a very good picture quality.

The rest is not important.

I am also used to iPhone habitat so Samsung has to be really good so I go thru the hassle of learning a new OS.

If you're not very tech savy, I'd recommend the iPhone 5s. They are easy to figure out how to use, don't confuse you with stuff you'll never use and the battery life is better.

I just bought the S4 and love it. It is super fast with 4GLTE. Only thing that I don't like is battery life. I had to turn off all the fun functions or it would die half day in. Also thinking about rooting it to Ubuntu soon. Can't do that with IPhone. Screen and pictures way better than IPhone.

This is good advice. I like more options with the Samsung and Android by us if you are not tech savy just go with the apple. The only other factor that might change your mind is the ability to use a SD card to add extra storage. I have a 32gb SD card that holds only music so my phones on board storage is for just apps and pics unless I move pics to card.

Much cheaper to add gigs of storage on SD cards vs the higher gb phones. Can't do that on iPhone.

There's a new iPhone hardware upgrade every 6 months. The Galaxy S4 will stay for a while with updates to software which will not cost any money. Galaxy is a lot more creative and personalized so it takes a little longer to get used to. The iPhone seems to be for smartphone rookies.

Hardware upgrades for the iPhone are about 1 per year and any software upgrades are free. The iPhone is for those who want something to work and is easy to use. Some of the most smartphone savy people in the world use the iPhone. Android phones on the other hand are bought by people who do not understand software. It's too bloated. There's multiple versions of the OS in production. It's similar to Windows PC's. Too many problems, mostly software related.

I also read some stuff online. Looks like S4 is the better phone. But most likely not for me. Too many customization etc. I will stick with the iPhone. Will place my order when it comes out.

I had been with the iPhone since it's inception but I upgraded to the S4 2 months ago.....It's not close, S4 destroys ....It's like comparing 480i to 1080p, no contest.....

S4 destroys it's owners with short battery life, too many added features that don't work, a fragemented OS and an app store full of sub-standard apps. Most reviews agree.

Everything has frequent minor upgrades to the software, but major iPhone OS upgrades are about once every 18 months - and they're free.

As with all gadgets, there really is no "best". It depends on what you are using it for and how much you can spend.

I am not a developer. I like a simple interface, easy to download apps, easy syncing with my computer and tablet, and listening to and downloading music. The iPhone 5 is far and away the best phone for me, but that doesn't mean it is the best phone for you. For example, I rarely use it for pictures (and never for video) so I have never compared phones along those criteria.

Not a big fan of this new update, but I have a Droid DNA with a cracked screen. I used to have an iPhone 4

I have a 3GS and I inherited a S3 from my son who stole my upgrade (what's theirs is theirs and what's mine is theirs). I don't like the S3 for syncing to my iMac or Airbook but I like some of the features that work with my iMac. I'm finding it harder and harder to read so I love the S3's big screen. So I'm disappointed about the size of the new iPhone. I swore I would get an iPhone when it came out now I'm hesitant. Keep in mind I'm middlin' when it comes to computer stuff. The iPhone seems easier to use but I stay on Apple stuff a good bit more than Android or Windows so it may just be a learning curve for me. I think I'll sell the 3GS and my wife's 4 then give her the S3 and get a new 5S. We're together so we use each other's phone anyway.

Me and my wife were the same. She loved her Apple and I just had an Apple because she had one. When I saw the promotion on the S4, I told her that we should switch carriers and phones. She wasn't so sure but then she gave in. She now tells me that she should of made the swtich a long time ago and doesn't miss the Iphone.

However, I do agree with other posters that Iphone is more simplistic. The S4 does have an easy mode where you can access some important features on the phone but it is still a little difficult compared to the Iphone.

S4 is the choice. You will feel like you are holding something.

The note is the ultimate phone/ tablet hybrid = phablet

I've had the iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, and now currently the iPhone 4s. In between the 3G and 4 I decided to go with an Android phone and I was not all that impressed. I am what you would consider tech savvy and even though the iPhone might be more simplistic than the Android OS I prefer iOS. Not to mention iOS 7 looks awesome and the camera on the 5s looks very promising! I am a photographer so that's very important to me!

One thing that I really appreciate about my iPhone (I'm still on the 4, not even 4s) is that it works exactly the same as it did the first day I got it a few years ago. I haven't had any corrupted software by downloading certain apps like I did with my BlackBerry and Black Jack II before it, the screen hasn't dulled, my battery life is still the same (good for about 2 days of normal use) and there haven't been any hardware issues whatsoever.

Could just be because phones are getting better and better in general, so don't take this post as me bragging about an apple product-- I'm genuinely curious of other peoples experience with Smart phones and longevity.

Same thing is true for me as well.

I got my 3GS 2.5 years ago and it is working like day 1. Battery Life didn't go down significantly. Didn't have any hardware or software issues.
