Just downloaded it a while ago. I like the new background look. The multi-tasking is okay but it isn't really "true" multitasking as I cannot open up Pandora and minimize it to the background while reading a book on the Kindle App.

Will be interesting to see how the battery life is affected with multiple apps running in the background.

I believe there is a new Pandora App or update that supports IOS/4 multitasking .. I doubt most apps will support it without IOS/4 versions or updates. The operating system update I believe simply makes multitasking possible but the apps still have to be updated to support multitasking themselves.

Yes, I misspoke. After you download and install the new OS, you can go download updated apps that are 4.0 compliant and Pandora is one of them.

I really like the universal mailbox for email. It does get a little annoying looking through multiple mailboxes and I only have 2 email accounts, a lot of people have more then that.

I don't know how I feel about the email grouping feature, kind of like Gmail groups emails by sender.

I'm trying to figure out how to change my background when the phone is locked, to match the background when the phone is unlocked.

Settings -> Wallpaper -> Select the Wallpaper you want, Choose Lock Screen or Home Screen.

I've been having the "stuck on backup" issue. Pretty frustrating, but I'm trying some of the workarounds. Oh well, I got confirmation today that my iPhone 4 shipped today, so pretty soon it won't matter.

Interesting.

I didn't have any issues when installing the new OS. But I really don't have that many apps on my iPhone, so that probably helped.

I'm very impressed by this new OS. I love the new email management features. The only thing I wish they would have done for email is group the emails by "Email Sender", as opposed what they are doing, which is grouping the mail by "Email Sender and Date".

Most of the issues apparently have to do with the 3G. I skipped upgrading to the 3GS.

Yup.

Mine updated (I've got a 3G also, didn't think the 3GS was worth it, looks like we were right.) but it took at least an hour and a half, I think it was closer to two hours, actually.

I obviously wasn't paying close enough attention though, I missed where they announced 3G wouldn't be getting multi-tasking, so I spent 5 minutes trying to pull up the task bar for it before I sensed something was amiss.

All the other updates are pretty minor, at least as far as the 3G is concerned. I'm eager to get my iPhone 4 and test out the video though, probably what I've been looking forward to having in a phone the most and the quality seems pretty good from what I've seen.

Just got an email from Apple that my iPhone 4 is going to be arriving a day early, I'm not mad at that. I'll use it to go down to the Apple store on launch day and take video and pictures of all the people in line.

I have the 3GS and It probably took about 30 minutes for the entire process complete.

I'm not sure if I am going to get the new iPhone. I'm thinking about just getting a new iPhone every other version, as opposed to getting a new one each time they come out.

Most of the new features of the new iPhone are things I really wouldn't use, so I will probably wait until the next version comes out.

How does one update an IPod touch without losing the songs, apps, and games?

If I just go to ITunes and click update, it says it will delete everything.

Are you using the same PC with iTunes?

If you try to update from another PC then it will wipe everything out...

FedEx says my iPhone 4 will be delivered by 3:00 pm on 6/23. Here's to hoping it's true.

Yeah it's the same PC.

When I click update, it says

"Updating to iOS 4.0 will delete all mdia, including iTunes Store purchases. To preserve your media, apply this update on the computer where you sync music, videos, and photos."

In Itunes, right click the iPod and select 'Backup'. That way if your stuff gets hosed during the update you can go back to how it was. If iTunes is on the same PC with all of your movies and music, it's no big deal anyway as you can re-sync the media to the iPod once the update completes.

Actually, as you noted. It's not true multi-tasking, so it doesn't exactly operate the same way true multi-tasking does. (applications need not be aware)

Also to note, multi-tasking does not drain battery life. Poorly written applications do. For instance, an audio application like a music player takes hardly any power to run. You should be able to listen to your music for hours without major battery drain while multi-tasking. Of course as long as the other app your using isn't sucking massive amounts of power.

On the other hand. If you get a n00b programmer that write a poorly written application that does all kinds of "select loops", etc. It will eat battery life like it's going out of style.

To say multi-tasking eats battery life is completely and utterly untrue. My phone usually has 4-7 apps running at all times. If I get an app that eats battery life, I uninstall it. (The Android has a built-in app that tells exactly how much battery power each app is using)

Just installed 4.0. Not bad.

  1. The folders are nice, easy way to group apps.
  2. Backgrounds are cool, you can set the home screen background and lock screen separately :)

I have a 3G as well.

Pretty much makes OS 4 worthless. Folders is cool but no personalized wallpaper upgrade, no multitasking.

I'm gonna get a 4 as soon as I can.

Well, the mail update is useful. I guess it's a nice package but nothing to write home about if you have a 3G

I'm a Software Developer by trade, I understand what multi-tasking/multi-threaded applications are and how they work, I have written quite a few of them, although none on a mobile device.

You ask any Software Engineer about multithreaded applications, they will tell you by their nature, they consume more resources but the difference between a good and a great developer is how much resources it will use.

Thanks though
