The Bengals starters are Pacman Jones and Terrance Newman - familiar names here that were run out of town.

The 2013 Team Passing ranking for the Bengals:

Avg = 5.9yds - 2nd
Yrds/gm = 209 - 5th
Attempts = 614 - 5th most
TDs = 11th (though TDs per attempt improves that metric)
sacks = 10th
Rating (NFL.com) = 2nd

Imagine how much better they would be with a $50M #1, a #2 who was drafted for a 1st and 2nd, and a $30M slot corner.

They were 10th in sacks even without atkins. Numbers are nice but the way the bengals play also goes into the formula. They are more short passes and methodical drives, dalton is not the most accurate long ball passer. Maybe Rueage for the GROZ groupies. :)

Evidently Newman had more miles left on the treads than we thought. I'm happy for him.

Evidently. :)

A defense is as strong as its weakest link. You can't have liabilities anywhere or they get exposed.

Heavily skewed by the offenses they played against as well. Stafford threw for like 350 and 3 TDs, Luck went for 320 and 4 TDs. Neither threw a pick.

The Bengals were successful against SD and GB with Rodgers, and Cutler was solid but not sensational.

On the flip side, they played nothing but terrible passing offenses in their division, and the AFC East.

I'm happy for Newman. I'd be the first to admit that i thought he was physically done 2 years ago.

But they are cancers and not RKGs...

Spencer, Ware, and Hatcher were all there in 2012 and the CB play was just about as bad statistically.

It could be that the club missed on the two new CBs (Claiborne and Carr) and picked the wrong guys.

Or picked the right guys but then changed the entire defensive scheme and these guys might not fit best…oops.

Was about to say, imagine if they had to play with our incompetent playcalling, especially those days, that was turning the ball over regularly and was the masters of the three and oh...

That's a good point.

There are a lot of team with a great DL that sucked this year (lions + bucs). You have to take the entire team, coaching, and scheme into account when judging a defense. People that say a good front will always win games are full of themselves.

This all comes down to their defensive line. They have an awesome DLINE in Cincy and that makes the cornerbacks job very easy. Claiborne team in college also had a great dline and it made him look a lot better than he actually was too. Newman and Jones both suck.

I'm happy for Newman. I'd be the first to admit that i thought he was physically done 2 years ago.

It wasn't a bad assumption that he may have been done. He was 33 during his last season in Dallas and dealing with several nagging injuries.

How much are the Bengals paying him? How much would the Cowboys have paid him if he remained in Dallas? I don't know if there is a difference or not.

Newman has 4 interceptions in 2 seasons in Cincy and had 4 his last season in Dallas.

I don't think there is anything ironic about Newman and Jones playing for the Bengals and being in the playoffs. Sometimes it is time for a player like Newman to move on. Pacman was only in Dallas one season and was horrible. He then played the 2009 season in Canada. In his 4 seasons in Cincy he has 4 interceptions. Dallas should not regret letting him go.
