Ironic Cornerback Situation

Spencer, Ware, and Hatcher were all there in 2012 and the CB play was just about as bad statistically.

It could be that the club missed on the two new CBs (Claiborne and Carr) and picked the wrong guys.

It also could be that Spencer, Ware and Hatcher are sub-par players.

Adam jones is starting, because Leon Hall went to IR, their normal starter. However he is playing very well.
Newman beat out Dre Kirkpatrick, their #1 pick 2 years ago [he has been injured off and on past 2 years], Newman playing well too as we all know.

And they are doing this with Mike Zimmer, the DC we all wanted out of Dallas so bad a while back.

They have solid safety play and a good pass rush, this shouldn't surprise anyone they have a great defence.

Not everyone.

Adam Jones was always a good enough corner. Most forget he was the 6th overall pick, he just had issues on the side.

2008 was a circus of a season, and purging him from the roster made sense. He could not/would not thrive in this environment.

I don't rue losing him much. I'd actually be happy for him if I truly believed he were a changed person.

Heavily skewed by the offenses they played against as well. Stafford threw for like 350 and 3 TDs, Luck went for 320 and 4 TDs. Neither threw a pick.

The Bengals were successful against SD and GB with Rodgers, and Cutler was solid but not sensational.

On the flip side, they played nothing but terrible passing offenses in their division, and the AFC East.

??
Cincy beat the Lions in Detroit 27-24. CJ had half the yards he had against dallas. Cincy beat Indy 42-28. The Indy game, Cincy got up 21-0 in the 3rd Quarter. The Colts were 100% pass after that.

Stafford lit them up, and the Colts pass offense has been relatively weak since Wayne went down.

DB rankings have nothing to do with winning, losing, or how many yards CJ had against the Cowboys.

Effectiveness against the pass correlates with W/Ls

Evidently Newman had more miles left on the treads than we thought. I'm happy for him.

It's what I've suspected for a while. It's not that we've had bad corners. We've had a bad defense overall. I never thought Jenkins was a bad corner either. He got burned via an inadequate pass rush and coverage schemes. If this team can improve its D line in the offseason, I strongly suspect our corner play will improve.

Yea, and my point is that its easier to be effective against the pass when you play more than half your schedule against teams who suck at passing the ball.

With some if the answers around here you know that Jerry has succeeded.

I wonder how many of the people that rue us cutting a 33 year old injury plagued, underperforming, over paid corner are also calling for Ware's head

I always felt the Titans overreached drafting Jones that high. I didn't think he was worth a top 10 pick based on just his on-field football skills. His 8 career interceptions have done nothing to change my opinion. Throw in his off the field issues and he probably should have lasted well into the draft.

another example of our medical/training staff. Newman always seemed to have an injury of some kind, he goes to Cincy and he has pretty much been injury free.

Except he missed 1 start in 2012 and 3 starts in 2013 with the Bengals. He missed 2 starts during his last 3 seasons in Dallas.

Alan Ball had a solid season as well and the Jags were last in sacks...

The Bengals starters are Pacman Jones and Terrance Newman - familiar names here that were run out of town.

The 2013 Team Passing ranking for the Bengals:

Avg = 5.9yds - 2nd
Yrds/gm = 209 - 5th
Attempts = 614 - 5th most
TDs = 11th (though TDs per attempt improves that metric)
sacks = 10th
Rating (NFL.com) = 2nd

Imagine how much better they would be with a $50M #1, a #2 who was drafted for a 1st and 2nd, and a $30M slot corner.

This assumes all things are equal in this league and all results would have been the same. Not sure you meant it to be, but this is perhaps the biggest strawman argument on this board about former players.

The butterfly theory applies.

I personally never thought Newman was bad here. AT the end it made more sense to cut him than keep him for his salary but I never saw signs of him being "finished". It was embarassing watching tight ends hurdle over him but he was decent in the end here.
