Hearing Bruce Irvin of West Virgina was told by a team in the bottom third that he will be picked in the first round..we shall see

Houston? Green Bay? NE?

With our luck it'll be NYG.

Are you serious? I love this guy, but I think even the 2nd round could be a reach.

I wouldn't be surprised. This past week there has been talk about him being taken in the first.

Thesidelineview.com's Lance Zierlein hears the 49ers are the "promise team" for Irvin in the first

Blowing smoke to raise his draft value? That's what I think. :)

If nobody picks him in the first, everyone will know he was a lying sack of you know what. Just another slap to his character! :laugh2:

I suspect that kind of "promise" happens routinely.

No one knows what other players will be available. And every "voice" in teh draft room is not the final say.

You're only picked, once you're picked.

Best of luck with the nickel package of Smith, McDonald, Smith, Irvin. Holy Moses. Plus you are in 3rd and forever trying to run on those guys.

Now if a team did and would, I think Jim Harbaugh would definitely be a guy that would pull the trigger.

Why would you even promise this unless you had an ulterior motive? (blow smoke to make someone else jump first) Either you're going to take him or you're not. Why tell him you are? It's not like he has some choice in the matter or that he knows you are going to take him will change something.

  1. Define promise.
  2. Who made the promise? Do they have authority?
  3. Contingent on what happening before they get on the clock?
Why would they do it? I agree there isn't much to gain (though your hypothetical "stir smokescreen interest" is plausible). But a scout or coach could be sincere, totally in love, totally intending. And then something unforseen happens. The GM disagrees, a surprise player falls, a surprise trade offer comes through.

A player is only picked, once they are picked.
