Gotta love the first week of camp. Irving is gonna be a break out player, Claiborne is dominating, Alfred Morris looks like he could run for 2,000 years, etc.

Just get me to the first preseason game, at least, before the hype train starts rolling out of the station.

Try to enjoy it while you can, @Sydla. ;)

Irving can be very productive with better DT play, he has an impressive wing span and can do well as a strong side DE.

I love Irving in his second season. I think he is really, really talented and just scratching the surface of what he can do.
____________

“It’s a great opportunity to play for the Dallas Cowboys and represent the star, and the fans. You’ve got to love the fans coming out and supporting us like this, whether it be training camp, home games, away games,” Irving said. “I mean, everywhere we go there are fans waiting to support us. That makes you want to work that much harder. There is no doubt this is the best team to play for in the NFL.

Sullivan: David Irving Poised to Be The Cowboys’ Breakout Player

The kid definitely has something, just hope he can be consistent.

C'mon guys, we do this every training camp. They are prospects until proven otherwise.

I'm optimistic, but I agree. Pass rushing is a hard skill. We'd like to think we've found our J.J. Watts, but we don't have any indication that that's the case.

I cant see Irving without thinking someone misspelled Irvin.

Eventually we will draft someone named Whitten.
Lol, same here. Hopefully Irving will go to the HOF and his bust will be placed by Irvin's. That'd make people happy.

What if Irving, Tapper, and Russell all hit? It would be nice to have a surprise top defense.

They seriously need at least 3 of the unknown DL to hit. This is assuming Crawford, Thornton and Lawrence play at least to their standards. Unfortunately you can't really rely on TMcClain for more than 4 games.

He might be involved in a bit of violence against women, but he really does it in a way we can live with, so that's nice.

That's a bit of hyperbole there............ "he's shown a lot" last year.

Not really. He showed a flash here or there but that's it.

If by he's shown a lot, you mean he made a lot of TFL's and sacks, then you're correct.

However, if you mean it that he has shown the ability to play with leverage as well as shed blocks at his ridiculous length, as well as showing he has a high motor and athleticism, then no, it isn't hyperbole. He showed a lot of ability in his limited chances. Guys his size aren't supposed to move the way he does.

There's a lot of guys that can play with good technique, etc. And he wouldn't be the first guy with great athletic skills to just not be able to translate that to the field.

The guy was a JAG last year. Nothing more, nothing less. You can show all the great technique you want, but it has to eventually turn into on the field results.

All he showed last year is that maybe he can be a good backup. I hope he ends up being more than that.

Not just technique. It is an innate ability to get leverage at his length... or more precisely, a knack for not losing the leverage battle even though his arms and height puts him at a disadvantage in the leverage department. His length gives him some natural advantages but that is typically offset by difficulties caused by losing the leverage battle. In Irving's case, he has the benefits of his length but unlike most, he is able to also maintain leverage. It allows him to get in the backfield better than most.

I wouldn't call him a JAG last year... I think our definitions for JAG probably vary. He showed a lot more promise than most DL rookies... much less for one we poached off of a practice squad (although he would have been drafted without the off field questions).

Anyway, our opinions just differ here. I have higher hopes for him than you do but that doesn't mean I'll be right about that. As is usually the case pro football personnel... time will tell who is right.

I hope I am.

He us nothing more than "just a guy" until he proves otherwise.
Agreed.

You never know how players respond to praise, but he has got a lot of press clippings as a "breakout" player.

Just hope he remembers where he came from.

With Lawrence out for the first four games and Gregory possibly out for the entire season (and maybe more) the opportunity is there for our youngsters to impress in a big way. I don't think there's any denying that guys like Irving, Tapper and Russell have the level of talent that are intriguing. If they're able to get off to a fast start, the FO and the staff will be intent upon affording them additional time and action.

With that in mind, I'm somewhat reluctant to look upon them as merely JAGS any longer. They all have quite promising traits that could quite possibly propel them onward and upward in the weeks ahead. Let's just hope that all three of the aforementioned D-linemen manage to find the right stuff to contribute generously. They'll be presented with their golden opportunities and sorely need to make the most of it. It can happen.
