Is Brad Johnson causing problems already?

The WR's and TE's Johnson will be throwing to in Dallas (in practice) have been to a combined NINE Pro Bowls.

Johnson's WR's and TE's in Minnesota have gone to a combined ZERO Pro Bowls.
Doesn't matter if he's throwing to Jerry Rice in his prime, Johnson's arm is toast. Hopefully practice is all he ever does.

Brad Johnson did not say anything that many QB have not said, they are not coaches. He was brought here to be a backup QB whose job is to step in and take over at a moments notice should something happen. Wade Wilson was brought into coach the QB position. I'm sure if Romo asked for Johnson advice on something Johnson would give it. I think the last thing Romo or any young QB needs is several voices in his ear telling him different things or how to do his job, he only needs the one and that is his position coach that is what he is there for.

I see nothing wrong with this...besides, he IS competing for the starting job. If he played lights out better than Romo all summer and in preseason, would we actually want the guy who was playing worse to start?

It's very unlikely, but he's not here to hold Romo's hand...he's here to be the backup QB which means he should compete every day without making a stink in the media, but he should be trying to be #1 on the field.

Again, it won't happen, but I like his attitude, and personally, Romo needs a little competition, just as every player does, even if it's not obvious competition like bringing in another starting QB.

I agree I absolutlely love Brad's attitude and confidence to be the starting qb come opening day. Brads not here to be Romo's lil guiding cast he's here to win the starting job. Romo didn't have a very good ending to his season last year anyway's and a lil stiff competition from a vet like Brad will only let us see if he gots what it takes to take the next step and man the starting quarteback position. Let the best qb win the job in t.c. and pre-season. Lets not hold Romos hand and make it easy for him and a cakewalk to be the starter.

Great posts.

Sorry for my first post to be negative but this is odd!

I think not...if anything it puts pressure on romo to only get better. competition is a good thing.

I expect Johnson to conduct his business as he always has in getting ready for the season however I don't think Jones brought a 16 year vet to compete for the starting job, he brought him here to be a backup. I don't think anyone in the organization believes this is some open competition for the starting job.

I think QBs bristle at the idea of being labeled a mentor to a younger guy. If you are a mentor then that insinuates that you are head to be a friend, a teacher and a helper for the starting QB. That description takes away from the fact that Johnson is still a skilled player and can play and win in the league. If he says "yeah, i'm just here to be a mentor" then that is him pretty much saying I can no longer compete in this league.

But he also said he wants to see Romo do well and have a great year. He is not a problem.

Hey, haven't seen you post in a while. Where you been, or has it just been me not paying attention?

Good to see you posting.

The rampant hypocrisy in this thread is THICK.

If Bledsoe had been retained and said anything like this he'd have been skewered.

While Johnson is better than Tim Couch :D I shudder at the thought of him having to come into a game this year.

The guy better be a good mentor, because he sure as heck isn't a good QB any more.

I heard him interviewed on The Ticket today...he basically said that he does not know how much "mentoring" Romo really needs based on his play last year and he also then went onto say it was his job to be ready to play at any given time........nowhere at all did I get he wants to be the starter over Romo........I got the impression he understands his role and I am quite sure he knew that role before signing...........some of you are drama queens.
Yeah.

This news story is based on Johnson's post-signing interview with the Dallas media. It was conducted via telephone. It can be accessed at www.dallascowboys.com.

When I listened to it, no red flags were apparent. I liked how Johnson gave Romo credit for being a capable guy who has been in the league for several years himself.

Myself I would have liked to have seen Bledsoe remain in the backup role but that is not something he wanted to do and I can respect that. As for Johnson he has served in this role before and has done a great job of being able to come in and help his team. As for the mentor stuff I have heard other vet QB say the same thing so I don't hold that against Johnson nor did I hold that against Bledsoe. They are players not coaches.

You're being ridiculous.

Noone here would ever dream of bashing Bledsoe for saying something so innocuous.

Or would they?

I maintained the same stance:

Most QB's I have heard will say if another guy ask him a question about something he will answer it the best he can, but the bottom line the QB coach is the one in charge of the QB and it is not Drew job to make sure Romo maintains the starters job that is on Romo. Believe me I'm not knocking Romo by any means but in this league you either stand on your own 2 feet or you fall. Drew was brought into play the position not to teach others how to play it and I have heard the same from guys like Brett Favre.

Honestly, I was very pleased to read Johnson's comments. The last thing we want is a QB who wants to be lazy and accept the "mentor role" without competing for the position and thinking of himself as a starter. Competition in camp is a good thing and it makes players better. Thank god Johnson didn't take the defeatist attitude and became complacent taking a backup role. I want fiery veteran who is competitive and wants to start. Good, this will make Romo better.
