Is Cowboys owner Jerry Jones the best general manager in the NFL?

...Let’s take a look at how well Jerry Jones the General Manager has fared in making the playoffs without Jimmy Johnson as the head coach. I myself thought I had a pretty good idea what the results would be but I have to admit I was a little shocked by what I found. So here we go. These are playoff appearances by division since 1994.

NFC East NFC North NFC South NFC West

Eagles- 12 Packers- 16 Falcons- 8 Seahawks- 10

Cowboys- 10 Vikings- 10 Buccaneers- 7 49’ers- 10

Giants- 8 Lions- 6 Panthers- 6 Rams- 5

Commanders- 4 Bears- 5 Saints- 6 Cardinals- 4

AFC East AFC North AFC South AFC West

Patriots- 16 Steelers- 13 Colts- 16 Denver- 11

Dolphins- 8 Ravens- 10 Titans- 6 Chargers- 8

Jets- 7 Bengals- 6 Jaguars- 6 Chiefs- 7

Bills- 4 Browns- 2 Texans- 2 Raiders- 3

There are only 6 teams since 1994 with more playoff appearances than the Dallas Cowboys. These teams are your usual suspects and are the epitome of stability and success in the salary cap era. Of course, what you do in the playoffs matters as well and the Cowboys haven’t had the success they had in the past. They’ve had teams that were capable of winning it all (2007) but haven’t had the luck to put it all together and make it happen as the teams of the 90’s did.

Jerry Jones is no doubt a Hall of Famer, but it seems most people don’t give him the respect he deserves for his accomplishments. In fact, up until last season he was an easy punch line for the talking heads and unhappy fans that wanted him gone. That talk has simmered quite a bit after the Cowboys 12-4 run and a playoff victory last season, but was it ever really justified?

When Jerry stopped GMing, the team started WINning.

Agreed. When he started letting Stephen, McClay and Garrett decide the direction of the team, things changed. Jerry still makes the final decisions but now he listens to those guys.

Here is what I feel comfortable saying at this point, and this is from a long time vocal critic of Jerry Jones:

I am extremely pleased with the performance of the front-office over the past 3-4 years and Jerry Jones is the leader of the front-office (ie, he is the General Manager). Therefore, I am extremely pleased with Jerry Jone's performance as a GM.

Ultimately I'd still rank Ozzie Newsome, Ted Thompson, and probably Bill Belicek ahead of him, however, after that I'm not opposed to ranking him in somewhere in spots 4-8 or so and there is no shame in that.

The Cowboys finally seem to have found a consistently offensive and defensive philosophy that is working for them and it seems like they are sticking with it. That's half the battle.

Over the past 10-15 years, you always know exactly the kind of defense the Ravens are going to run and the types of players they want to place in that defense.

Over the past 10+ years, you always know exactly the kind of offense the Packers are going to run and the types of players that want to place in that offense.

That kind of long-term consistency in offensive/defensive philosophy is worth the price of gold in the salary-cap mandated parity of the modern NFL.

Well, this thread should take us just about through the rest of the offseason. After this debate has run its course... training camp will have started.

It's really not debatable.

He impeded progress for so long.

If there was no Romo... We would be soooooo far removed from anything remotely resembling success.

You're preaching to the choir here...

I'm just glad that he has let other's give him the info and that he's now listening.

I feel 100 percent confident that I am more familiar with the roster of players in the NFL and what's going on in college football than Jerry Jones.

I am also at least as good as him at talent evaluation.

So are most of you.

So, is he really a GM other than in title only?

Agreed that Jerry Jones isn't a GM in the Ozzie Newsome / Ted Thompson mold.

I disagree with if you think that's the only archetype of a NFL GM that can win.

All that really matters is whether the front-office is adequately adding talent to the roster. I've never liked Jerry Jones, however, I cannot quibble with the overall spike in talent level of the roster over the past 3-4 years.

I like the trend.

Might I add:

Those great "drive for five" plus runs that were accomplished in the nhl, mlb and nba. We had a shot at that.

Not debatable. We had a shot.
You can say what you want as to why we would not have won 5... But we had a chance.

Jerry fudged that up. We will never know.

Oh, I do, too. I generally like Jerry despite his chasm of flaws because I admire his passion and never doubt his desire to win. But his stubbornness to never admit his failings as a GM was maddening.

Now that he's given those chores to McClay, Stephen, and Garrett, he's completely in my good graces again. (I could do without his constant declarations about how great his rookies are, but that's minor stuff.)

As an owner, he's without peer.

Not the best but he has gotten better
He has learned to trust the scouts and staff around him
Most importantly he has learned that good players are safer and smarter than swinging for the fences

Jerry pushed to the point that he had to be fired (Jimmy)...why? He wanted all credits? He had all in Miami, anything change when Jerry was NOT involved there?

Funny, when facts are presented, the only counter is that Jerry was not involved. That ignores the discussive element as well as really identifying what Jerry did or didn't do. Sometimes even a GM has to react to other's actions. But to Jerry's credit, he stuck with Jason Garrett from when the new contract was brought in and the Cowboys no longer had an offensive line.

He's obviously not. I'm not a big Jerry fan, but the fact that this question even gets asked does underline how over the top most of the Jerry Jones hate really is.

He's a lightening rod, for sure. I've always thought he's an incredibly mixed bag as a GM. He can deliver amazing value like he did landing Collins this offseason. Then he can risk way too much like he did with Joey Galloway or Roy Williams. In a league built around not making big mistakes, big whiffs can set a program back years.

Recently, he appears to be working JG's system, which is great. Let's see if he can restrain himself if we get closer to the big prize.
