...Let’s take a look at how well Jerry Jones the General Manager has fared in making the playoffs without Jimmy Johnson as the head coach. I myself thought I had a pretty good idea what the results would be but I have to admit I was a little shocked by what I found. So here we go. These are playoff appearances by division since 1994.
NFC East NFC North NFC South NFC West
Eagles- 12 Packers- 16 Falcons- 8 Seahawks- 10
Cowboys- 10 Vikings- 10 Buccaneers- 7 49’ers- 10
Giants- 8 Lions- 6 Panthers- 6 Rams- 5
Commanders- 4 Bears- 5 Saints- 6 Cardinals- 4
AFC East AFC North AFC South AFC West
Patriots- 16 Steelers- 13 Colts- 16 Denver- 11
Dolphins- 8 Ravens- 10 Titans- 6 Chargers- 8
Jets- 7 Bengals- 6 Jaguars- 6 Chiefs- 7
Bills- 4 Browns- 2 Texans- 2 Raiders- 3
There are only 6 teams since 1994 with more playoff appearances than the Dallas Cowboys. These teams are your usual suspects and are the epitome of stability and success in the salary cap era. Of course, what you do in the playoffs matters as well and the Cowboys haven’t had the success they had in the past. They’ve had teams that were capable of winning it all (2007) but haven’t had the luck to put it all together and make it happen as the teams of the 90’s did.
Jerry Jones is no doubt a Hall of Famer, but it seems most people don’t give him the respect he deserves for his accomplishments. In fact, up until last season he was an easy punch line for the talking heads and unhappy fans that wanted him gone. That talk has simmered quite a bit after the Cowboys 12-4 run and a playoff victory last season, but was it ever really justified?
