Is DT out of consideration in rd 1 if Osa does get resigned?

. I think there is a good chance Eberflus wont see Mazi as a fit
LOL...Stephen Jones has already said Mazi is an excellent fit for Flus scheme. Take it for what it is worth

Eberflus’ system will bring a 4-3 defensive front with philosophical similarities to former Dallas defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli’s system, Jones said. He’ll seek “beefier” defensive tackles to stop the run, a category Jones expected 2023 first-round draft pick Mazi Smith to fill well. The Cowboys will also look to extend free-agent-to-be defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, a homegrown talent whom Jones characterizes as a “priority” in their free-agent course of business, pending Eberflus’ evaluation.

But the ethos Eberflus brings might as well describe Parsons’ play style.

I really doubt he is worth what his agent wants. Stats do not tell the whole story; they never do. I have not seen ANYONE that thinks Osa is all that.
We have stats and modern metrics so we can create an easy way to evaluate all of these guys that we don’t watch as much as our own players. They don’t tel the whole story individually but create a pretty clear picture when they’re evaluated collectively.

You can have your own opinion…but his value is going to be rewarded with a big contract whether it is us or someone else.

That doesn't make any sense. If he is philosophically similar to Marinelli then Mazi absolutely doesnt fit

I have to laugh at the analytics crybabies. You do not need numbers to tell if a player is a player if you are a competent coach.

I laugh at being called a “analytics cry baby” bc someone doesn’t agree with me and thinks the eyeball test from the 1950s is the best way to evaluate. NFL teams are literally standing up analytics departments to keep up with the times.

But to each their own.

We need multiple DTs. Even if we sign Osa it certainly wouldn't rule it out for me.

Personally, I'd let him walk if he won't take a reasonable deal for an above average starter. He's likely to be over priced on a scant DT market in FA.

The EYEBALL test has been around since football began and every great coach has practiced it but YOU claim your formulas are better?

Osa had about 60 pressures last season, which was roughly top 5 in the league. Who on the roster now is replicating this production if we dont resign him?

Unless we can trade back a couple of spots, I like Walter Nolen to replace Osa and pick up an extra pick in the process.

These aren’t my formulas…and I 100% believe they should be considered in the evaluation alongside tape.

It’s like saying the fax machine has been around since the workplace began so we shouldn’t be using emails and modern communication and collaboration technology.

Noone…and a rookie isn’t either. If they don’t want to pay what he’s going to require that’s fine but the DT production goes backwards. Hard for me to get on board with that since it’s arguably our worst position.

Early reports are saying Cowboys are making it a priority to resign Osa to a long-term extension. He is an ideal fit for our new up the field scheme. Same goes for DLaw who also is a fa, where he status is more unknown.

If Osa is resigned, is taking a 1st rd DT off the table for the Cowboys?

The way they think, I believe it is, unless Graham somehow falls in their lap. With a new offensive HC, I think that will be the direction they will want to address.
I think if Osa is resigned then a DT in the first is off the table. But a player such as Shamar Stewart should be considered. Stewart can be a chess piece with his ability to play the 3 and DE, but he can also stand up on the edge, and at 290 lbs. he would be a handful .We were discussing traits the other day and Stewart has high traits...he needs to hone his pass rush skills, especially his hand fighting, but his run defense is on par and with his ability to set the edge would give us some stoutness across the line, and when paired with Kneeland we can have the making of a nice duo.
I think Ghoston and Lawson should be resigned, sign DT Cowart from the bears and when it comes to Dlaw maybe it's time to say goodbye.
Draft another DT later in the draft, say maybe Robinson from Nebraska or Alexander from Toledo.

Should it be? No. Will it be? Probably

I personally wouldn’t open the checkbook for Osa. If it was a reasonable contract I’d be all for it, but he’s probably going to end up a top 5/6 paid DT and I just don’t think he’s that much of an impact player.

I do think an early DT is off the table in that scenario, they have invested day 2 picks in the past for the position. Adding a veteran with a good draft prospect seems like the best way to address this position. I like what you are saying, but they have add problems with those versatile players in the past and how to use them correctly

You may be right but if you listen closely to Stephen, it appears Shotty AND Eberflus have a clear mandate.....fix the run on both sides of the ball. In other words, I think Stephen is all ears on what's needed. If you wanna sign Osa and draft another one .......sell me.

I guess from someone who thinks numbers are everything this is no surprise
numbers do not show heart or determination or instinct
