I always look back at history to understand why some teams became great and why some failed. One team I always refer to is the San Francisco 49ers. Although I hate them because they beat us in the 81 NFC Championship game, I look at their history to determine how they became a dynasty in the 1980s.
San Francisco became great when they let a genius named Bill Walsh coach and CONSTRUCT their team. Bill Walsh had an innovative plan to design an offense that created mismatches and used multiple spread formations to test the defense. If your team played the 49ers in the mid-80s and they didn’t have linebackers who could cover then they were in for a long day. Landry’s gap control (flex) defense was outdated for this type of offense. Bill drafted the players. Some high draft picks in his first couple of years never panned out (especially running backs he picked). I then understood they were not compatible with this “new offense” he was installing. He then picked a hybrid back out of Nebraska named Roger Craig in 1983 and he finally got a back that was compatible with his evolving team. Later he picked a kid from a small college (Mississippi Valley State) named Jerry Rice and Walsh’s offense really began to take form.
With that being said, I see history repeating itself in a way. No, Jason Garrett is no Bill Walsh, but he is very smart. What made Walsh so intriguing was the fact that he would look at his rivals’ defense and design plays that exposed their weaknesses. Jason Garrett is a film guru and time will tell if he does likewise. Garrett does design plays and has called them in games
IS HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF?
Both Walsh and Garrett hit on 3rd round offensive players in their first year as head coach.
In Bill Walsh’s first year as coach he drafted Joe Montana in the 3rd round. In Jason Garrett’s first year as coach, Demarco Murray was selected in the 3rd round.
THEY BOTH DRAFT 4 defensive players with the first 4 picks
In Bill Walsh’s 3rd year as 49ers coach he drafted 4 defensive players with his first four picks and their first pick becomes an all pro stud and they win the Super bowl that year.
1981 San Francisco 49ers Draft
Round Overall Player Position College
1 8 Ronnie Lott DB Southern California
2 36 John Harty DT Iowa
2 40 Eric Wright DB Missouri
3 65 Carlton Williamson DB Pittsburgh
In Jason Garrett’s 2nd year as Cowboys coach he drafts 4 defensive players with his first four picks. They trade up to get the best defensive player in the draft.
2012 Dallas Cowboys Draft
Round Overall Player Position Birthdate College
1 6 Morris Claiborne DB Louisiana State
3 81 Tyrone Crawford DE Boise State
4 113 Kyle Wilber LB Wake Forest
4 135 Matt Johnson DB Eastern Washington
Am I saying the Cowboys will win the Super bowl this year? No I am not, but I do know history always has a strange way of repeating itself.
