Is it foolish to even consider RB in round 1?

The best OL in the league wasn't built for a 2-3 year run. And were not changing HC's anytime soon like those other teams.

This OL other than Smith is going to be over their rookie contracts and they are going to be looking at enormous increases over their base deals then.

Good luck keeping this line together then.

We'll see.

I hope we do, but logic tells me it will be touch and go.

First(not aimed at OP), i think it's absolutely asinine to eliminate any position, any year, in any round unless it's a kicker, punter or long snapper. Second, I don't think you should worry about a second contract that is at least 4 years, and likely 5 years away. You look for talent and worry about whatever contract dilemma you run into in the future. Also, it could be looked at from a different angle. Drafting a RB in Rd 1 gives you a 5th year option. This could be extremely useful for the RB position in general. You get 1 extra year of cost efficient team control and can walk away from a player who you got one more prime year from. It also prevents needing to do a long term deal for a year while preserving franchise tag. Wouldn't most people have loved being able to keep Murray for one more year on a team friendly cap hit, while also having the tag for Dez?

I'm not saying aim for a RB in Rd 1, but it shouldn't be eliminated by any means. Stick to BPA, and let the talent sort itself out.

Having the best RB behind our line provides a greater potential for yardage production.
In key points in a game a more powerful or gifted RB might get you that big
turning point in the game, etc etc

It is not foolish if that player is the best player on the board at 27. I would hope if a highly ranked DL player was there Dallas would select him but given the simple fact none of us know who will be on the board at 27 I can't say taking one of the top RB would be foolish.

This is the list of RBs in this "deep draft class" that will be legit potential number 1 RBs.

Gordon, Gurley, Coleman, Ajayi, Yeldon, and Johnson. MAYBE one of them will slip into the third, but if we want an RB in this draft, it must come in the first or second round.

And seeing as how our team lived and died by the run last year, you better get a quality RB on this team.

Maybe several?

This may be a year where trading down into the top of round 2 and then packaging an extra pick to move your 2nd or 3rd round pick back up in the 2nd might be a really smart option this year. With our needs and this draft, it would look pretty good to have 3 picks in the top 60. I'd take that over the 27 and 60, but then again, you have to have a trade partner.

Teams are in constant pursuit of pass rushers because as soon as they get them, they can't pay them all. And you simply can't have enough of them.

Teams are not equally desperate for defensive linemen. You're trying to excuse our shortcomings.

Hardy, Lawrence, Crawford, Mincey, McClain, Hayden, and the three rookies Coleman, Bishop, and Gardner.

That isn't without promise, especially when they grab another player early in the draft. Spencer could come back as a situational pass rusher, too, and he was good late in the season.

There are MULTIPLE teams that are in much that same boat or worse.
