Is it just me... or is our draft plans contingent on Winston signing?

Or is it that our draft plans are seemingly becoming more and more contingent on the rumor that Eric Winston is going to sign here? Is Doug Free really the hostage taker he is being painted to be?

Oh... and on a more personal note... I missed being here. I love me some Cowboys banter... life gets in the way.

I think they are holding out on signing anyone on the line until after the draft...Free is option C to me...he is a cut waiting to see if we get an OLine in the draft...regardless, he isn't holding anyone hostage...

Seriously... OL is obviously a need for us... but how much? Is it enough that we take a lineman at 18 or can we move down and have our cake and eat it too with Winston? We don't have a clear picture of what we have... only glimpses and shimmers... so you scoff at me as if everything depends on this?

Please... and I suppose you thought that Romo's extension was foolhardy. I'm telling you... it's going to happen... Winston being here will directly influence the draft... not because like you perceive it. But it will shift priority of when things get addressed.

A Winston signing before the draft will either lead to a trade out or a bailout on the OL in the 1st round. Mark it.

Even with Winston, we need two guards and a center.

Our draft plans are not seemingly becoming more and more contingent on the rumor that Eric Winston is going to sign here. If that is the plan for the entire draft it's a bad plan.

You aren't going to get the team's actual draft or FA plans. Media and fan speculation and narrative are just groupthink.

Yes we do unless you think winston can play 4 positions at once. We have below average guards and centers. That needs fixed.

Getting back to the OP's contention . . .

Winston and Free do not impact the draft at all. Winston at best is one of a number of fallback OLs if the draft does not fall in that direction - short of offering to sign for the minimum, neither he (nor any other OL) will sign before the draft. If Dallas drafts a RT as one of the first three picks, Winston will be a complete afterthought.

Free is even less of a thought. After June 1, Free either takes a significant pay cut, or he's released. Even if he remains, he will fight for a roster spot during camp.

And what the hell does Romo's extension have to do with the OL???

The Winston signing in my opinion only leads us to NOT draft a RT in the draft first or second round.

A Winston/Parnell rotation would serve good at RT for the season.

Signing Winston would not affect our draft plans regarding guards though.

I believe we grab a center at some point but probably not earlier. Berny and Costa would be battling it out at center while we could upgrade at the G position.

I think you have it completely backwards. The option of signing Winston and/or cutting/keeping Free is entirely contingent on how the draft falls.

I don't think Winston is signing and I don't want him to sign anyway. If it's not a draftie or a young FA, I'd rather cut Free and play Parnell for a year and see what he has. It's not like we're contending for the Superbowl anyway.

If the FO knew what they were doing, then the draft selections should drive the bus..most successful teams build through the draft...then, you go out and sign targeted FAs after the draft is over to either build the team further, or try to get over the hump

...if we have a very good draft (certainly possible as the last few have been good), then we go after a Moore or Winston (examples) ONLY if we haven't solved the problem in the draft...

..and, @ Count, I think with health, this team is a playoff team...once in the playoffs, the hottest teams usually get to the superbowl....anything can happen. but, I wouldn't agree with you that we aren't SuperBowl contenders. We aren't going to be listed ahead of the top tier teams, but so what? get in to the dance and then work your way to being prom king....
