Is it just me... or is our draft plans contingent on Winston signing?

I do believe we will see some of the better FAs available sign in the next week or so fearing they may lose all leverage once teams are able to address needs in the draft. I'm sure player agents are desperate for deals now.

In answer to the "No we don't need to replace 4 O Linemen" argument:

Technically, it's true that we don't need to or maybe don't even WANT to replace 4 of our 5 guys. It's also pretty unlikely that this will happen. THat's an awful lot of turnover.

Would it be nice to upgrade our RT, RG, C and RG? Sure. But we are not gonna have 5 top flight o linemen, and if we did, we'd never be able to afford them all.

We'll (try to) do what most teams do, and that's hide a guy or 2 and improve the overall chemistry of the line. When it comes down to it, there's a fair chance that 3 of the five guys we intended to have start last year will be playing in some capacity in 2013.

I think we can reasonably hope for 2 new faces on the OL. Whether that's a RT and RG, RG and C, or a LG and RT, who knows. But we can hope that the remaining guys will also play better. Putting better talent next to those guys does help. Part of our problem was a combo of the players taking turns at screwing up, and then having other guys trying to cover for them.

I'd be happy if we replaced the RG and RT. Can't fix all 4 in one season. Hell, I say "All 4" but the truth is Smith is just a "Potential" guy right now. Next season he has to reach that potential or it'll be "All 5". He needs to play better, period.

I actually think the Winston signing is kind of contingent on the draft.

Or at least I hope it is.

If Dallas doesn't secure a RT in the draft, or at least upgrade OG and C, I think a guy like Winston is pretty much their only option.

I don't care to see another season of tryouts at RT.

Dallas has 1 OL who has shown promise. Then they have a bunch of questions marks to his right.

We don't need all stars across the board. We just need 2 great players, 1 good player (Winston or Moore), and then consistent play from the other 2.

Come on Cooper/Warmack!

According to this thread, you and Tex did.

Even with Winston, we need two guards and a center.
2 Guards + Center +Winston = 4.

No we don't.

Sure we do.

Yes we do unless you think winston can play 4 positions at once. We have below average guards and centers. That needs fixed.

You realize that there are more than the 22 starters on a team, right?

Absolutely, I think you need to replace 4 linemen and right now.

The mentality that you can't replace 4 is based on nothing. The reality is that the line was an embarrassment last year. The reality is that we were ranked 31st in the league in rushing yards, and 27th in touchdowns. This isn't conducive to winning games.

We had 3 new starters in the secondary last year, and this year we'll have a 4th new starter with the replacement of sensabaugh.

We have options in the draft and stop gaps for the interim. The idea that signing a free agent to a 1, 2, or 3 year contract prevents us from being able to afford things in the future is ridiculous. You sign 1-2 free agent starters, and you draft 1-2 players to start in the first 4 rounds.

As I said, not doing so would be folly. You can get away with 3, but you should do 4. Two on the other hand, won't cut it.

Brandon Moore - RG
Jonathan Cooper - LG
Travis Frederick - C
Eric Winston - RT

Not only is that not overly expensive, but it's entirely feasible once you've addressed Free's contract in addition to Livings, Bernadeau, and Costa.

Valid points, but I really don't think Livings necessarily needs to be replaced. He was our best OL last year. Even better than Smith. Yes Smith has that whole "Upside" thing going on, but this year it's time to live up to it. I'm tired of the "Potential" tag. An "elite" draft pick was spent on him, he needs to start playing like an "Elite" player.

Much like I told people to cut Dez slack, I would say to cut Smith slack as well. Extremely young player, playing a new position, and in a new scheme, on top of being a very new player to the nfl. He'll be fine.

You surround him with the requisite talent necessary to be an nfl quality offensive line, and we'll be more than fine. You'll see this team turn into an nfl powerhouse.

1st round - Guard
2nd round - Safety
3rd round - Center
4th round - Running back
5th round - blocking tight end/wide receiver

Free Agency
1. Eric Winston
2. Brandon Moore
3. Laurent Robinson*

We do this, and this team is going to have a very strong year. You add some health to it, and we'll be even more successful.

We need to get ourselves in position to start controlling the scoreboard. Forcing teams to pass and pass early. You do this by scoring points. You do this by being able to protect the quarterback and by being able to run the ball effectively in the redzone.

Truth. Well said. Free/Berny/Livings money could easily be turned into an offensive line that will play well. The last time we had a pretty solid offensive line we went 13-3.

Laurent would give us a deep threat and when he was with dallas he never really took big hits. Which would be better for his health.

I think our FA's will be signed post draft though.

I don't necessarily think it's a matter of talent because even average linemen can find success. It's a matter cohesiveness which leads me to believe what I do. We've had bad groups before.

I just don't think it's as bad as it's being painted to be. I really don't. Just something stable and vocal about it may be all we need. Winston isn't the best but he is stable and been on the field. What do we need? Stability and someone who can stay on the field...

My opinion... but talent doesn't mean much in a league where you are more valuable if you can stay healthy.
