Is it just me, or is the league getting a bit stale?

Salary Cap and Free Agency have destroyed Pro ball. Now the NIL & portal are doing the same to college sports. I honestly don’t watch much anymore but am supremely grateful to have been able to watch the real NFL from 1965 through the mid 90s. So many on the board never saw the game when it was really something!

I would agree. The vibes are way different than they were even about 5 years ago. I think there’s a few reasons.

QB play is down right now. You don’t really have the 10-15 rock solid starters that have been holding it down for their franchise for a decade that we had for years in Brady, Big Ben, Palmer, Romo, Eli, Peyton, Brees, Ryan, Rodgers, Rivers, Prime Russel Wilson, Prime Andrew Luck etc.

Pad rules at practice have led to a decline in the quality of offensive line play. It’s impossible to get real reps at that position as a unit in T shirts and shorts.

All of the officiating changes have also resulted in a pretty watered down and disjointed game experience with all of the flags flying. When I was in Ireland I went to a few Gaelic football games and played a few pickup games with locals myself. The rules were simple, and flexible. It’s rare for a penalty to occur and it is usually reserved for an egregious violation. They said Gaelic football is not focused on the rules, but retaining the core characteristics of the game. The NFL could learn something here.

Additionally, I understand it’s a business, but the over commercialization has gotten pretty out of control too. If you watch any weekday sports shows, I would estimate at least 33% of the discussion is focused around lines, over unders for yards, TDs, etc. Almost nobody I know, even people that were previously die hards for a franchise, really watch a favorite “team” anymore. Everything is about what ridiculous 7 leg parlay they built that week. Games being moved to a number of different streaming services just to gauge the consumer even harder is also taking a toll.

As the social media generation has come of age, player egos also seem to have generally ballooned to levels that wouldn’t have been possible previously. The social media atmosphere surrounding the NFL is corny.

The whole thing has less substance than it used to. That’s fine, in the end it’s just entertainment, but in my opinion it’s just worse.
Very good post well done

The game moves slowly, too many baby flags, too many commercials. Need to get reviews done even faster.

Let the men play the game and don't go to commercial break every time the game stops.

I always thought yhe rules were being juiced for offensive play from 2000 to 2020. I've changed my mind. Turns out the qbs really were special in that era.

Just watch college ball like I do. Way more fun to watch on TV and in person. Cowboys stink and Jerruh is keeping the franchise hostage. Change is never coming.

Too many teams? Not enough talent to go around? Salaries too high?

Take your pick
I can name you 4 teams that should be reduced to minor league play.
A mediocre QB such as Dak earns $60 mil a year?
As for lack of talent, look at the league, you have junior varsity QBs starting named Lock, Devito, Rush, Gardner Minshew, Caleb Williams etc.

Is it just me, or is the league getting a bit stale? The overanalysis of whether to go for it or not. The over officiating to where you can barely go a drive without 3-4 penalties. The seemingly worse play on the field than years past. I get that players are getting bigger and faster, but the football intelligence seems to be reducing.

I'm just curious why it seems like the league just doesn't seem quite as good as it used to be? Is it just because the Cowboys aren't good this year that I'm noticing this? Either way, as far as I can tell, the NFL product this season seems worse than I can remember.
Because there is no threat of the offensive player getting hit. Quarterbacks are as comfortable in the pocket as I am at home watching the game in my chair. Receivers have no worries about safeties hitting them and they also have gloves that allow them to catch every pass. Your shocked when they drop a ball or don't score. Then add in kickers are automatic from 50. Its Arena League Football.

In the case of the Cowboys, we're now basically watching a preseason game every week of the regular season. Scrubs. Terrible football. Nothing like we saw last night with the Chiefs/Bills.

I lost interest in the League for a bit in the late 1980s, and feel myself being pulled into the same place now.

It’s been stale for a decade. I haven’t prioritized Sundays around football in years now. I rarely watch games outside of cowboys game now unless I like the match up. I never missed a Sunday or Monday night game ever in the past.

It's absolutely unwatchable.....It's all scripted......fixed. And you can see who is in the in club....and who isn't. It won't change as long as Goodell is in charge.

Well, and I'd like the next in commissioner to be someone like Peyton Manning who knows the game inside and out. Problem is, the owners will want another yes man so they can keep making more.
