Is it too late for a QB switch?

Is it too late? Probably barring collapse. I think you're just too late in the season to likely have your replacement QB get fully into the swing of things. This would be different if you had less competent QB play, and if QB play erodes further then it might come back into the equation.

Is there anyone left on the planet that hasn't already given their opinion on this subject?
Me...At least not on this specific topic. I agree with the OP in sentiment. Dak is not fragile and I suspect even he would acknowledge he has much to learn. And who better to learn from than Romo.

That said, I don't put last week's loss on him. He had a hand in it, sure, but the whole offense struggled. I also believe a big issue was behind the scenes. I suspect Dak was being pressured out of his wheelhouse from the coaches. The deep shot to Dez that led to an interception, for instance, may have been a combination of Linehan trying to back up the defense and Dez typically being able to win those types of situations. Had it worked, the results would have been phenomenal for the ground game. I'm thinking last week was the eye-opener this team needed to recommit themselves to their ultimate goal. They will come out with their hair on fire tonight.

Now you have everyone's opinion.

I don't buy into the alpha-QB theory in the first place. Many NFL teams don't have any choice for obvious reasons, but if you can keep teams off-balance, make it harder for them to prepare, and minimize the weeks where opponents match up well against your QB's strengths, then it's foolish to mindlessly trot out the same QB every play, every week. Eventually some team will stray from that approach (and I don't just mean a "slash" role), and then a lot of teams will copy it. That's how the NFL works.

The alpha approach does take a lot of pressure off coaches though, which is probably the main reason teams stick with it even when they have a choice. Better to let the starting QB take all the heat, even if his particular strengths were never going to match up well against an opponent who knew they'd face him on every down.

From the beginning, I would have preferred them just saying Tony will play, regardless of how the team is doing. Maybe 2 snaps, maybe 20. Tune in and find out. And leave it at that. Then you're utilizing all your resources. They've made it a lot easier on their opponents than they ever needed to, and put a lot more pressure on a rookie QB than was ever necessary. .

Can't think of a team that's made a switch at QB with only two games left in the season due to injury or performance and went far in the playoffs. It's going to be interesting to see what the Cowboys do if Dak has another rough game and it leads to another loss. If the team decides to stay with Dak regardless how bad he plays, that probably means they feel they're too far into the season to go back to Romo for him to get his game playoff ready. If there's going to be any chance for Romo to work some of the rust on his game you have to play him against Detroit, giving him two games to try and sharpen up his game. Tonights game is going to be very important for Dak and the team because Dak's starting job could be at stake.

To go back to Romo this late into the season to try and keep the wheels from totally coming off what we've built this year would be a desperate move but it's a move that might have to be made if Dak continues to struggle. I still believe if we're going to go anywhere this season it has to be with Dak. He's been playing all season and I just can't imagine Romo's game is going to be sharp enough for us to go deep into the playoffs. He hasn't taken a hit since preseason and could be gun shy about facing a pass rush which could lead to a number of sacks and turnovers. If Dak gets off to a rough start tonight and things start to snowball, there's always the possibility he could be pulled during the game just to see what Romo could do.

It's not a question of whether it's too late to switch QBs but rather a question of what's best for the team in the long term.

If the team as a whole became alienated by such a move, the long term effect might quite possibly be a serious mistake.

I kind of wish they would just go ahead and pull Dak, because when Romo is laying on the turf once again... the controversy ends and Dak returns to his rightful place as starting qb.
That's funny, but its not funny. Controversy would end emphatically.

If we have to go back to Romo and he does play well, that would open up a whole new can of worms during the offseason. The Cowboys would probably have to bring Romo back and have him and Dak compete for the job during camp or it could be Romo's job to lose. It would be hard to release Romo if Dak's game continues to falter and Romo looks good taking over. Things are going to get pretty interesting this offseason if Dak has to be pulled and Romo plays well.

I don't wish an injury for Romo, it's a foregone conclusion that he's going to be injured again since he insists on continuing to play. Might as well get the inevitable out of the way and over with.

This whole notion that you can't go back is completely ********

Broncos benched Manning last year

Brought him back and won the super bowl...
They didn't bench him, he was injured.
