Is LB the weakest part of our defense?

The team lacks a ton of talent on the defensive side of the ball and they're weakest where it matters most. To lay it all on Monte Kiffin is a cop out.

Injuries played a big part. But coaching also played a big part. They have talent. The players just dont know their jobs. The physical gifts of this defense is not the problem. Its the mental part. This team wasnt beat physically at all last yr. Mental mistakes made them bad. Thats coaching. So whos the one lying to themself?

No. They lack talent. It's why a guy like Rob Ryan can be blamed here one year and then go to New Orleans and have immediate success the next.

The players aren't good enough. Blaming Monte Kiffin is as wrong as blaming Rob Ryan.

How the heck can any fan of this team say the Cowboys have the defensive talent to succeed?

This DL rotation is an abomination. An embarrassment.

Blame a coach for not winning with that? I don't think so. Get better players.

Other than center and left tackle this team could use one of everything, so there's no need to reach, just take bpa or trade yourself into a spot to take a DL,,,, that's where they're hurting the most IMO.

It is up there with D-Line.. Which is why I want either Shazier in 1 or Telvin Smith in 3

When you fail to run a simple Dime package all yr because you dont want to put your 4th CB out on the field is not bad coaching?

For last year I agree. However, for this year we have a gigantic hole at RDE.

Even Broaddus on the Draft Show mentioned that the team is really targeting RDE and that is where they see guys like Barr or Kony Ealy playing.

I will be very surprised if our 1st or 2nd round pick is not a RDE.

Totally agree. Although LB seems like a need its not even close to important compared to our Dline, mainly RDE. I really hope we get Barr. Im thinking we might have to trade up to top 10 to get him. I do think though if Barr is gone Kony Ealy would be next in line.

I can't believe people here are blaming Kiffen as the culprit for our defense. The main culprit is Jerry and the FO. Bad drafts and neglect of our Dline throughout the years have left our defense out to dry. I don't know why the Cowboys FO wait to everything falls apart to start making changes. It seems that they just don't have the foresight to realize the Dline and Oline is where its at when it comes to building a team.

I wish the Cowboys would draft just like the Giants - which is heavily weighted towards passrushers. Fix our passrush we fix our defense. Of course we will still have holes here and there. But a passrush can coverup some of the weaknesses with our defense almost immediately. Hopefully, this year they see the light and go RDE passrusher as our first choice and another passrusher in round 2.

We'd like to be more balanced. More balanced in all three phases of the defense. We need to stack less embarrassing games on top of less embarrassing games. Our guys are competitors and they want to be adequate every Sunday. They just need to focus on the task at hand and work within their role, week in and week out. But we're focused on playing the San Diego Chargers August 7th. That's what we're focused on.

Uh, huh . . . (cough, cough)

Due to injuries, it was clearly our weakest spot in the 2012 as all 3 starters were out by the end of the year. 2013 saw injury but not like the DL where all 4 starters missed at least some time.

Lee Carter Wilber Holloman and Durant are on the squad. Now that is not to say that a top 50 pick would not significantly add talent but there are bigger fist to fry.

Mclain Melton Hayden Bass seems thinner. So does Church Wilcox Heath Johnson.

Mincey Spencer Crawford Selvie seems the thinnest to me.

Just saw another thread showing how the lowest rated players on defense last year were Wilber, Holloman and Carter. Not to mention, Sean Lee hasn't played a full season since high school.I'm just wondering if LB might be the weakest part of our defense.

If I was a betting man, I'd say Lee misses 4+ games this season. Carter has the potential to be a bust and off the roster mid season. And our only other LBers are 2nd year Holloman and a guy without a true position in Wilber.

I'm starting to think we're much more set on DL and the secondary than LB. And I think we're awful on DL and secondary.

Don't buy into the PFF garbage. It has been shown many times to be worthless.

At one point they had Doug Free ranked higher than Tyron Smith.

In the 4-3, 2 of the LB spots are much more important than the 3rd. The SLB spot is off the field in the Nickel and other specialty packages.

MLB:
Great when Lee is healthy. Durant looked good a MLB but only lasted 1/2 game before getting injured. Holloman showed excellent upside at MLB in that he played well in the final game despite never playing or practicing that position before Lee's injury. He was a college Safety that played more LB in his final year in college.

WLB:
Carter has the ability and was a good player in 2012. He appears to be a slow learner. Holloman is going to push him for a starting spot.

SLB:
Many options here. The loser of the battle between Carter and Holloman is the most likely choice. Wilber showed upside at SLB considering that he spent training camp and the preseason practicing/playing as a DE. Durant is better than the credit that he gets.
