Is Marion Barber a spare?

MBIII, round 4 pick ... the Boys had all morning to think about the pick and odds are it was a pick-by-position ... we needed a backup for JJ.

Accd to reports this was the pick not so much by pure talent, but because EGeorge was done like Richie Anderson, and Reshard Lee couldn't handle the assignments. We needed SOMETHING at RB in the draft ... the brain trust was getting nervous ...

The Boys draft guys Sunday morning apprarently argued between MBIII and Ciatrick Fason of Fla. ... now Fason kicked *** with huge avg-per-carry in preseason for the Vikings but has done nothing since. He supposed to be not great in the passing game, or had other problems accd to reports ... (like reshard lee) ...?

All but 1 Cowboys scout picked Barber. That holdout lobbied for Fason before the pick. (Who was it?)

Are Jeff Ireland and company "adding points" to determine their picks? ... if so MBIII was a solid pick. In college maybe like in the preseason he had decent pop, had decent burst to the outside, had decent pass catching ability, could block OK etc. ... add dem points up

Decent, but kind of a logical construct, maybe.

Jimmy Johnson said to make it in the NFL you had to have a "dimension" ... if not rare strength or speed, then rare instincts or durability or character or something ...

Does MBIII lack the rare "something" .... if so he's not alone. Maybe he'll make it at special teams. Randal Williams I hope he's not ...

I still think Barber is going to be very good for us and will make a big contribution to this team... And I'll predict it will start as early as this week.

With Julius hurt and A-Train grumbling, he'll get his chance... And I think he'll do very well.

I think Barber is a pretty good player, i saw him in college a few times, and he looked great. I just think he came out of college early, because of competition with maroney. He will get better as the season goes on and will probably contribute a lot more next year.

Barber's gonna be good for us, I think

I remember reading that some people thought he came out of college too early (think that was him? not sure)

I'd be willing to bet he's just not ready for the NFL. I think he's got all the intangibles, probably just gonna take a little longer than we thought

I think Thompson has been a pleasant surprise so far.

I am not about to give up on Barber yet though, I think he has some talent.

Personally, I think he had some success at Minnesota doing things his way. Now Parcells wants him to do things the Parcells way.

BP is breaking him down and building him back up.

I think Thompson is a big part of it. He has been a very big surprise. We drafted Barber before we knew a thing about Thompson.

Gives us time to let Barber develop.

Before claiming any player is a spare we should follow the Landry\Parcells mantra ... give them three years. If after three years they haven't produced then call them a spare.

Actually, we got him before we even knew we could sign Thompson. Lets just be happy we have such talent at the position that we can have a newly drafted RB as a 4th string. He probably would be starting by now if we still had Hambrick. My how our fortunes have changed. The only thing I see holding TT back is if he can hold onto the ball. That will get you in the doghouse real quick on a BP team. I trust that BP knows RBs and that he will serve some function on this team in the future.

Barber definitely has not looked good so far but he also hasn't been given much opportunity.

Tyson has performed better than all reasonable expectation so it is a bit of a wash.

DW: That is greatness!

The kid makes known he wishes to be stranded with THAT, the Pettitti legend suffers a bit. Hah! Along with Thurston and Lovie, no less.

How can a guy, who was a 4th round pick, who is 5 games into his professional career, be a spare?

I hear ya. Seems to be a lot of microwave mentality amongst fans. And not just ours. Right now or else.

This time last year there were many calling Julius a bust and we should have taken Stephen Jackson in the first instead of making the BUF trade. With the Giants this weekend, I'm surprised you didn't mention the other rb they could have drafted in the fourth, Brandon Jacobs.

What I like about Barber is his versatility. He's been Wally Pipped a little bit since his injury in the preseason, and Tyson Thompson, to his credit, has really taken advantage. I think Barber will have a nice long career in the legue though...

Just recently, I heard Parcells talking about how the key to a lot of these guys is that they find their niche. I don't think Barber is ever going to be a 16 game starter who gets 1200 yards. I do think he can be a very good backup who can contribute on special teams and play well when he's needed.
