Is MBIII a full time back?

Don't get me wrong, I like what he does and the guy truly is a beast. But after re watching the game he seemed to be a bit wore down in the second half.

I guess my question is can he carry the monster share of the carries and be effective late in the games or was this something of an anomaly?

His violent style of running and lack of acceleration at that next level will forever prevent him from being "THE" back for any team who knows the meaning of balanced attack.

No, and no. And even if he attempted to, he would look like Shaun Alexander does in two years.

Nobody knows yet.

not really. so far i'd say a damn good back but to what degree - dunno. for now hedge bets and draft the best you can to at least keep a solid duo going.

No he isn't but he's damn good and can carry the bulk of the load and be a star. We need to bring in a speed RB WITH VISION to compliment MB3.

I think he is -- but not like Emmitt was.

Barber is a "modern" full time back - just like starting pitchers thrown less now than in the past, running backs carry lighter loads.

Fred Taylor in Jax is a great example of this - he's getting about 15 carries a game and is still one of the best backs in the league.

Our "problem" with Barber is that he's an outstanding blocker so you want him in on 3rd downs -- but that kinda puts him in the role of the 3rd down back b/c he's so good at pass protection. This is likely what has contributed so much to how strangely he's been used

I dunno how Fred Taylor gettin' 15 carries a game is a good example. Sure Marion Barber can get 15 carries a game and be fine too, but he WILL need another back to share the loads. Fred Taylor's running style is also very different than MBIII as well.

I think he is. I don't even think he wore down that much in the second half and his lack of yards in the second half were more due to missed blocking assigments, missed blocks, and penalties putting them in bad position.

I think he got a little tired and needed a breather, which is reasonable for a tailback, and then Dallas brought him back in to gain a first down on third and short and he did.

The only question for me is how long he can be the full time back.

The guy had 20 carries in a half, thats alot right there. If he had a guy to spell him then he'd be fine for a full game of 25-30 carries.

spot on,and let's not forget this is the first time in how many years he has been asked to carry the load, probably have to go early in his days at Minnesota

He gives every ounce of his energy on every carry so yes it may consider some different conditioning.

We need a slasher to get some carries,I like Felix Jones

The fact that people say he is too slow is ridiculous, Emmitt was no speedster and we know how that turned out;)

I really like Barber because he is a smashmouth back that doesn't go down on first contact, but would have to think long and hard about trading him if someone were to offer a 1st and 3rd. It just seems like the NFL is going further and further from the run every season. To answer the question, yes Barber is a starting back, but would need someone to spell him.

He would be fine for one or two games at that rate. But over a full season that is 400-480 carries a game.

The NFL record for carries in a year is 416 with only 5 guys EVER breaking 400.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Very few backs are "fulltime" anymore.

Those that are, don't last long. Take a good look at Larry Johnson if you have questions.

Barber will be an excellent starter. We just need another speed back that complements him. Hopefully we can get one that doesn't have all kinds of personality issues or a propensity to run like a robot like our last one.

actually it is a very good example because I think too few people on this board understand how many carries is "full time" now

Portis led the league in attempts - with just over 20 a game.

Taylor was 17th in the league -- right in the middle of starting backs - that's a good average to look at for what a starting RB's load is

Blocking was the same in the second half. He couldn't beat one man in the hole in the 2nd half.
He was extremely tired-anyone who couldn't see that is shocking to me.

I don't think our line played any where near the way they did in the first half.
Wow.

Right!!

And a running back that I would like to have is someone like the Brandon Jacobs, or that runing back for the Rams...? Steven Jackson?

A back like that, so that MBIII can do his job...he's fast enough. Now a big nasty running back to open the lanes? MBIII would be gone...
