actually it is a very good example because I think too few people on this board understand how many carries is "full time" now

Portis led the league in attempts - with just over 20 a game.

Taylor was 17th in the league -- right in the middle of starting backs - that's a good average to look at for what a starting RB's load is
Fred Taylor isn't a full-time back though. He's the starter sure, but he still has a tag-team duo back relationship with Maurice Jones-Drew-Olivia-Newton-John. Taylor had 223 carries this season. When I think of "THE" back, I think of LT who had 315. Sure MBIII can be the starter, but it's pretty obvious he's gonna need someone like JJ to carry the load. I understand that the NFL is heavily turning toward tandem backs, but that's the point, MBIII can be a great side to a duo, just not THE back.

And Fred Taylor still isn't a good example, because he doesn't run like Barber.

he's a 1500 yard 20 TD back

You guys argue what full times means. He is our starter and we draft a backup.

It's clear JJ is not a NFL starter.

I think he could be, but hes more effective with a slasher type back as a change of pace. I mean, however, one that is good.

Very few backs are "fulltime" anymore.

Those that are, don't last long. Take a good look at Larry Johnson if you have questions.

Barber will be an excellent starter. We just need another speed back that complements him. Hopefully we can get one that doesn't have all kinds of personality issues or a propensity to run like a robot like our last one.

Being a fulltime back didn't kill Johnson. He had a bad O-Line, no QB to threaten teams deep, and his own blitz pickup was so horrid that it drove KC nuts this year.

I'd like a speed back who is a true HR threat, but Dallas at the very least needs a guy who can run effectively in man-to-man blocking schemes (we rarely go zone blocking and are not good at it) and who is decent in short yardage.

I really wouldn't object to having another Marion Barber backing Marion Barber up. He may not have the speed you want, but it's hard to argue with having two good tailbacks who can both do well on short yardage.

MBIII had 204 carries in the reg. season. That's 17 per game. In todays NFL that is MORE than enough. I wouldn't run MBIII more than 225 times in any one season. JJ had 164 carries or about 14 per game. All we need is a JJ replacement. He doesn't need to be a "full time back". Why do people get caught up in labels? Want a label? MBIII is a HELL OF A PLAYER. How's that for a label?

I believe he'll improve his conditioning and mental preparation because that's a big change... When you're the man back there you better be ready!

IMO the guy uses up too much energy fighting for yards he won't get. Which is awful fun to watch, and sparks the team up, but I don't know if he can do that 30 times a game for any length of time. I think he is great in his role, and feel that if we need to change the running game (and thats a big 'if' for me personally), than Julius should just be replaced with an equivelant style of back. Someone who we can insert with similar confidence.

Don't get me wrong, I like what he does and the guy truly is a beast. But after re watching the game he seemed to be a bit wore down in the second half.

I guess my question is can he carry the monster share of the carries and be effective late in the games or was this something of an anomaly?

so you're saying Parcells was right??

I'm saying I'm not sure. I don't know if he can handle a full load or if this game was not a typical example of what he can do. He was red hot in the first half and ice cold in the second half. I just wonder if it was adjustments the Giants made that we didn't react to or if he just wears down because of how hard he runs.

IMHO the OL was to blame. They didn't open holes for the run, nor did they block for Tony in the second half. Maybe 3 weeks off hurt the big fellas?

You can pound him for 2 maybe 3 quarters tops but for a full season??? Probably not and if he does 3-5 years and he's done.. We need somebody to share the load...

With the size and strength and violence of the NFL today, I do not think you can run any RB for 20-25 carries a game for a full season year after year. AND MB3's style is actually worse from that point of view since his fighting style gives the D a lot of shots at him as he is struggling for more yds.
If we tried to run him 25 carries a game for a full season that would be 400 carries- and that all but kills a RBs career in a year or two at the most.
Honestly, I do not think that MB3 would last long at 300 carries a year.
