No, it doesn't "hold the money hostage", but it doesn't go into the owners' pockets. Even if it did, they can't spend the money, so what would be the point?

It's the cap. That's how it works. It keeps teams from just buying up all the top talent. Why do you think in MLB every single year they pick the Yankees and Dodgers to be in the World Series, and why the Yankees and Dodgers are perennially in the playoffs? The MLB can is not a hard cap like the NFL, they can spend as much as they want, just have to pay a "luxury tax:" on what they overspend on players. The NFL's hard cap gives every team the same amount of money to spend on players so big market teams can't out-spend the small market teams like Jacksonville, Green Bay, etc.

Oh I understand it. I've tried to ask about a few things just in case I'm missing something but don't believe that I am. I think you're struggling with the difference between cap and cash. Last year we had a $255M salary cap, but SF spent $344M on player payroll while Vegas spent just $213M. In fact the last 4 years Vegas has been 23rd (2021), 24th (2022), 14th (2023), and 32nd (2024). So far in 2025 they are 25th being around $50M under the cap in terms of cash spending. Thats a team that has been in the top half of the league just once (and barely) in cash spend over a half decade now, but they still get the exact same revenue sharing check from TV deals as the 31 other teams in football. Just because they get the money doesnt mean they have to spend the money, or even 90% of it each year.

Along with a maximum teams can pay in player compensation there is also a minimum they must pay. Owners can’t make additional profit by not paying for players.

Chase making 40+million, do we realistically think he'll take 30+ million, he'd be a fool to do so. His agent wouldn't do it, and the NFLPA would come down hard on Micah for messing up the brotherhood!

It's going to be interesting to see how much he'll make, I'm torn 50/50 about us having three players with top deals, but it is what it is, hopefully all of this spending will one day translate into us going to a NFC championship game or even a SUPERBOWL!!
