When he talked about some LSU linebacker (who might actually have been a safety) "catching" McFadden from behind.
This on about a 70-yard TD run, so obviously nobody "caught" him.
I heard it.
And he said he "nearly" caught him.
Mayock has never denied McFadden's straight line speed. He said this several times throughout the broadcast.
He doesn't even think he's a bad player, he just doesn't think he is Superman.
In that particular clip, what he was talking about was his lack of an extra gear to pull away from pursuit. He was referring to the fact that LSU LB Ali Highsmith (who barely broke a 5.00 in his own 40 relay) was nearly able to catch him on a run when he should have been pulling away into the open field. The clip came about as the result of the discussion where many of McFadden's long runs rarely were through traffic and came because he typically broke everything outside where angles were his ally and that he rarely had to kick it into another gear to split a defense.
Everyone is so ready to jump on him because he's criticizing the object of far too many fantasies that they don't even listen to what he says. Case in point right here. He never said McFadden wasn't fast. Yet, some fans get all excited when he doesn't drop to his knees at the mention of McFadden's name.
But back to being stupid... Making sweeping pronouncements about a top player after watching only three games of his is definitely pretty stupid.
What analyst watches more than that? Outside of a team's fan, who is going to get to do it. Kiper doesn't do it. Nobody does it. They've all gone on record saying it is impossible. What he does do is watch coaches' film, which few do. And it tells a different story.
Sound like you simply agree with him about this one player.
And it sounds like many simply disagree with his opinion, so they resort to the "stupid" label. He is far from it. He at least takes time to back up what he says, like it or not. I am glad he's been added to the landscape. At least it makes the rank and file cackle like hens when he bucks "conventional wisdom".
That's far more than Kiper or any other analyst out there does.
