Is our defense as bad as most around here say it is?

I will say, our D should give a ton more effort this year vs last, with all the scrubs we had at QB.

They had to know they had no chance, as soon as the offense went on the field, defense was coming right back out. Now, not so much with Dak, and eventually Romo coming back in the fold. Those dudes (Dak/Romo) instill confidence in the whole team, defense feeds off that confidence, and perhaps it will be enough to keep them hungry and opportunistic.

Last year they had to be deflated, playing their hearts out, only to repeated no avail. Not this year baby, they see a pumped up, poised rook driving down the field, knowing they're getting help on the offensive side of the ball.

He doesn't know what we'll look like week 17. None of us do. Players develop and teams get lucky.

So you think someone like Jack Crawford is going to explode and become dominant by season's end?

Or maybe some team's GM will get drunk and trade us a stud pass rushing end? Maybe the Vikings will trade us Griffen for McFadden!

I agree with you that it's going to take time and identifying the right guys in future drafts to make a truly great defense. One problem,
Jerry loves offense and offense sells tickets not defense. If he has his way, he will always reach for that WR, TE or RB who can
generate buzz and get the mediots crowing. That's what NFL is all about, the continuing stream of profits and money for projects
like the STAR.

Ugh! I sure hope not!

As I said in another thread, I can already see Jerry going WR and TE with our first two picks in the 2017 draft. LOL.

Yeah, and apparently that's more likely than what Gosselin said, supported by actual facts.

I'm with you but, you have seen the past which is prologue. Jerry craves another SB just to
be able to add another trophy to his table at the Star. He sure wants to create more profits so
that he can pursue other money making endeavors. Stephen is holding the purse strings tight
on FA so that none of the bloated contracts hit the cap. He wants young, just good enough,
players on defense so that the offense has a chance to win games and shine for the reporters.

The other issue going forward is that they are unlikely to create and spend cap space on some upper level FAs as well.

I suspect in the offseason, they'll claim the defense was adequate and if they get Gregory back and Smith back they'll be great. Then they'll sift through the bargain bin for defensive help again and probably spend some premium picks in the draft on offense and then we'll just repeat the cycle again in 2017 where you cross you fingers and pray to your God that the defense can stop a team.

I agree, we all know Jerry and he likes him some shiny toys each draft season. Gotta do that marketing thing!

We need a splash signing this offseason, to go along with a heavily focused defense draft. Any big free agents you can recall this 2017 offseason? There were a few bluechippers we passed on that would have looked real nice (Weddle, Norman), tho they obviously aren't "rushmen".

i would say that the defensive line is horrid and the secondary is is not as bad as some are making it out to be

if you can't get to the QB, you're going to get exposed in the secondary because you can't cover guys forever

I don't see things quite that way.

There's some other horrible defenses this year but overall I would say it's pretty darn bad.

I suggest not going in the game day thread during the Packers or Bengals game. Things could get ugly real quick.

Ok Packers I agree with but the Bengals?? AJ Green and who else?? The Red Rifle? Lol

If Eifert plays, that's another weapon. I don't think the Bengals are any great shakes but they certainly can put up points if Dalton is on his game.

One way to get him off his game? Pressure him. Whoops.

Does Mayowa or Thornton strike fear in the hearts of offensive lines? Are they not mid-level
contracts easily cast aside?

Sure, but I don't see the 'devious plan' behind things like you do.

22nd in the league is below average especially considering our opponents. How bad will it be when we play more elite QB's and better offenses? That will be the ultimate measurement.

So far, I'd say good enough against lesser opponents.

Why? Who's coming in off the street to suddenly change things? Is one of these linemen suddenly, magically, going to get that much better?

His thinking, supported by facts, looks a lot more rational than the alternative.
It's possible

Nahh, not anymore weapons then the Gents and Skins have, they actually both have more. Now Burfict and company? Another story!
