Warning, random stream of conscientious to follow.
OK, I'm no expert, so hopefully I'm wrong but when I watch other teams defenses it seems like they are more violent and have players that knock the crap out of opposing offenses.
Specifically watching Green Bay, Arizona, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and even St Louis during the preseason, these teams had players who were knocking the crap out of people. In the Cards game, two plays come to mind; one was a running back who got slaughtered by a linebacker and was knocked out of the game with a concussion. The other was when a linebacker made a Kenny Norton-esque play by standing up a running back at the goal line when it looked certain he was going to score. Now granted the Cards gave up over 40 points, so maybe hard hits don't matter, but these plays sure were slobber-knockers.
I don't get the same vibe when I watch the Cowboys defense. Am I alone? Am I wrong? Does it even matter?
I notice other teams defenses swarming to the ball and making big gang tackles, but it seems our guys don't swarm or wrap up well.
I hear people say Demarcus Ware is a modern Lawrence Taylor, but as great as he is, I don't perceive him to be as violent and hard hitting as LT and it doesn't seem like DW has near the intimidating presence LT had. Do people fear DM's finesse or his violence? I'd say finesse.
Seems like really great defenses strike fear in opposing offenses making them fearful to go across the middle, short arm passes, etc.
Does our defense intimidate opposing offenses? Are they hard hitting or more finesse? Scandrick is the only player that comes to mind that seems to have an attitude but of course he's being roasted for hurting RW. Personally, I like his attitude and wish more of our D had the same edge.
Like I said, I'm no expert, so I'm hoping some of you x & o guys can enlighten me as to what type of defense we play and whether we have some guys that bring the wood and whether this even matters.
I'm not posting this to rag on our D (I'm in no way qualified), but to better understand our scheme and what type of D I can expect to see on the field.
Personally, I like the hard hitting, swarming, gang tackling type defenses, but maybe thats over rated.
What say the experts?
On a side note, what the heck is going on in Green Bay? Are they for real or is this just a pre-season illusion? If they're for real, it makes me wish we had dumped Wade, promoted Garret to HC and brought in Capers like Garret was reported as wanting to do.
