Is our defense more finesse than violent?

Warning, random stream of conscientious to follow.

OK, I'm no expert, so hopefully I'm wrong but when I watch other teams defenses it seems like they are more violent and have players that knock the crap out of opposing offenses.

Specifically watching Green Bay, Arizona, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and even St Louis during the preseason, these teams had players who were knocking the crap out of people. In the Cards game, two plays come to mind; one was a running back who got slaughtered by a linebacker and was knocked out of the game with a concussion. The other was when a linebacker made a Kenny Norton-esque play by standing up a running back at the goal line when it looked certain he was going to score. Now granted the Cards gave up over 40 points, so maybe hard hits don't matter, but these plays sure were slobber-knockers.

I don't get the same vibe when I watch the Cowboys defense. Am I alone? Am I wrong? Does it even matter?

I notice other teams defenses swarming to the ball and making big gang tackles, but it seems our guys don't swarm or wrap up well.

I hear people say Demarcus Ware is a modern Lawrence Taylor, but as great as he is, I don't perceive him to be as violent and hard hitting as LT and it doesn't seem like DW has near the intimidating presence LT had. Do people fear DM's finesse or his violence? I'd say finesse.

Seems like really great defenses strike fear in opposing offenses making them fearful to go across the middle, short arm passes, etc.

Does our defense intimidate opposing offenses? Are they hard hitting or more finesse? Scandrick is the only player that comes to mind that seems to have an attitude but of course he's being roasted for hurting RW. Personally, I like his attitude and wish more of our D had the same edge.

Like I said, I'm no expert, so I'm hoping some of you x & o guys can enlighten me as to what type of defense we play and whether we have some guys that bring the wood and whether this even matters.

I'm not posting this to rag on our D (I'm in no way qualified), but to better understand our scheme and what type of D I can expect to see on the field.

Personally, I like the hard hitting, swarming, gang tackling type defenses, but maybe thats over rated.

What say the experts?

On a side note, what the heck is going on in Green Bay? Are they for real or is this just a pre-season illusion? If they're for real, it makes me wish we had dumped Wade, promoted Garret to HC and brought in Capers like Garret was reported as wanting to do.

I would agree to a degree. Many of the younger guys on the defense like Spencer and Carpenteravoid contact instead of taking on blocks they try and jump around, this will work if the player they are trying to get to is of average talent but the great players will see the crease that was created from them jumping around the blocks. Prime example last year in Baltimore Spencer was doing this all the time eventually we got burned when they either let him take himslef out of the play or the down blocked once he jumped to the left or right.

Bad habits can be created if proper technique isn't followed and avoiding contact when you need to force a cutback or something is wrong technique.

Ware was pretty violent early in his career, but the refs were calling him for unneccessary roughness so he toned it down.

Rat and Sensabaugh are the only 2 that seem to really enjoy punishing a ball carrier t hat I've noticed.

Yeah our D lacks aggressiveness and hunger. We can still be good but we wont ever be confused with the Ravens or Steelers.

finesse by a mile. Our best pass rusher lays the qb down more than he hits him or puts him down.

Are we getting good results?

2008:

@ St Louis L 34-14
@ New York L 35-14
@Pittsburgh L 20-13 ( thee D did look good for 3 qtrs)
Baltimore L 33-24 ( I'm still not over those two long TD's)
@ Philadelphia L 44-6

Are these the kind of results you're happy with? 3 of 5 games were complete mail-ins and we looked awful. The other two were all time melt downs.

Different team, different year, I HOPE!

That is due to Ware going for strips and turnovers. I will take that anyday over just laying a really good hit on him.

You can pick out certain games where any D struggled or gave up a few big plays.

Steeler/Raven type players:

Jay Ratliff
Orlando Scandrick

Bradie James is a notch below, and seems like Sensabaugh is like him as well.

Then there is DWare a generational talent but a nice guy. Would still be a great player on any D.

After that we have a lot of finesse with creampuff being the biggest one.

yeah i like the forced fumbles but sometimes he doesn't have a shot at a fumble so he needs to smash the qb. I think that's one of the reasons that we got no picks cause qbs were willing to take a sack since our defense doesn't punish qbs like Baltimore and Pitt.

Oh I agree with you, just saying that Ware's #1 priority is to attempt a strip if possible.

I would also say more finesse: they definately need some more nastiness, but I just want to win. Yeah, I think Green Bay will be the surprise team of the NFC. Hate to say it, but I think they'll win their division and go deep in the playoffs. 11 wins or so. The offense is solid and as for the 'D....I'm a big Capers fan..............he's good.

every yr is different...if you want to choose to live in the past and not be optimistic when the team is 0-0, thats your own thing I guess
