Is our defense more finesse than violent?

That is due to Ware going for strips and turnovers. I will take that anyday over just laying a really good hit on him.

I'm not sure I follow this. From what I've seen, one of the best ways to force a fumble is ato lay a really good hit on a guy.

Ask Pittsburgh's offense how finesse we were last year.

I think this all comes from seeing our own team more than others. I mean, you see people here sometimes complaining that we don't get enough pressure on the passer. Well, we only led the league in sacks last year -- and by a huge margin.

And I don't know if there even is such a thing as a finesse defense that's any good. Look at your own example -- you're talking about the Cards, and they gave up a score almost every single possession.

every yr is different...if you want to choose to live in the past and not be optimistic when the team is 0-0, thats your own thing I guess

The purpose of my post was not to be optimistic or pessimistic, it was simply to have a dialogue about the type of defense we play and whether it is even important to have a smash mouth, hard hitting D.

Looking at the past (AS OPPOSED TO LIVING IN THE PAST) is just a way of projecting an idea of how this team may or may not perform this year.

Why people like you can't understand this will forever bewilder me.

Saying "if the results are good, it doesn't matter" does nothing to add to the purpose of this post or enlighten anyone as to the type of D we play and the importance of having a hard hitting D.

Good points, thats why I asked. I never played football and dont know how to analyze the x's & o's so it's nice when someone with the expertise has the ability to break things down and explain what really matters.

Sometimes I wonder if we as fans have analysis paralysis and are harder on our own than we are on other teams.

It's definitely a finesse D. All you have to do is look at the tackling. It hasn't just been since Wade got here. They weren't tackling well under Parcells either.

The last "big hitter" was Roy, and he definitely intimidated anybody going over the middle.

most of Lawrence Taylor's forced fumbles were not on "big hits"...and he forced as many, if not more QB fumbles than any defender I have watched. He got alot of them with that "swat" move where he would try to hack the arm or the ball, rather than simply going for a big hit.

sacks are great...really laying into the QB is nice...but forcing a fumble, regardless of how its done is better

LT had more of a combe big hit-arm swipe. qbs don't fear getting hit by our guys so they're more willing to take a sack than force a throw. also doesn't help that our secondary doesn't look for the ball.

LOL, of course you’re bewildered, reading comprehension is not your friend.

You're not answering my questions, you're answering the question you want to answer because it apparently gets your panties in a wad when people question your Dallas Cowboys.

You're too sensitive to get the point of my post so don't waste anymore time interjecting your useless replies (although I'm sure you will-thank gawd for the ignore feature)

Does the tackling need to be better than it was last yr- yes, without question

Would it be nice to get more turnovers- yes, without question

But gauging whether a defense is good or bad based on hard hits isnt all that telling either. As you even mentioned in your OP, the Cardinals had a number of big hits, but their defense was absolutely putrid and they gave up tons of pts, yds and big plays. The Cowboys championship teams certainly didnt have a "menacing" defense, but they were sound from a fundamental standpoint and played exceptionally well as a unit. We had a couple f "big" hitters, but I doubt anyone would confuse them with being as intimidating as something like the 84-86 Bears defenses. At the end of the day though that didnt matter though did it? Those Cowboy teams won 3 championships in 4yrs, the Bears managed 1.

Thats why it doesnt matter as long as the results are good.

Now that's the kind of insight I was looking for, thanks for your thoughtful reply

Ever since I heard Jerry say Bobbie C is a "Finesse guy," I can't get that word out of my head...

Tonight didn't change my feeling about the defenses vibe.

I'm not saying they won't be good as the 1st team seemed to get the job done, but the energy, intensity, lack of turnovers and big hits gives our defense a completely different feel than what I see from other teams.

Maybe it's the stadium and how the game looks on TV, it just comes across as sterile and cold with low energy out there.

Who the heck knows, it is pre-season after-all and Detroit went 4-0 last year, so hopefully I'm in left field.
