Edit: This thread can't help but remind me of the words Bill whispered to Pettiti during camp last year: 'I will die before I let you fail.' I think he keeps the kid. Bill can never have too many projects - look no further than all the assistant coaches around him.
I agree. The number of 'projects is not the issue'.
There are no sacred cows for Parcells - he will trade or release anyone. Even the most valued of 'his guys' who are 'with him on Sunday', like Keyshawn, who Bill has sent packing twice now.
But Bill's 'investments' are something that in his 60's seem to mean more to him than ever. Listening to his pc yesterday, and hearing him mention he 'spent a lot of time' with Antonio Bryant, you could hear the regret that the investment, like with Quincy, did not pay off. The older a coach gets, the less time he has for 'projects', and the more valuable they become.
Petitti holds a special status....the initial interest, the enormous weight loss, battling thru that ankle injury last summer, trying to regain stamina as he lost the weight, the trial by fire starting all those games....all of this shared between player and coach and resulting in an 'added value' that no outsiders are going to recognize. The Rob Petittis of the league are a coach's immortality, and Tuna, more than any coach I have ever witnessed, feeds off lifetime relationships with players he has developed.
Suitors will look at Rob as a still developmental player who might start, might back up, and might not even make their final 53. I don't think his value to the 'outside' is anywhere near what it is to Bill, who nurtured, pushed, cajoled, conditioned, force-fed incredible amounts of info, technique, ideas, and advice to...at any age you just don't look at that kind of blood, sweat, and tears lightly. At age 65, it's your last efforts reflected in a player whose development means a whole lot more to you than outsiders realize.
Hey, if someone phones in a high pick for Rob, or the return specialist of Bill's dreams, or a sure-fire hedge against a Fergy injury...I suppose he'd have to go for it.
I suppose too, if a team were giving Rob a starting slot, Tuna would think a bit about not standing in his way. MAYBE
I've been wrong a'plenty about Tuna, but I just don't see any owner or head coach attaching the 'value' to Rob that Bill Parcells must have.
BTW, welcome to the Zone!
