Is Rod Smith the answer at runningback?

I watched the All-22 today and L. Collins was pretty bad at run blocking. He missed blocks, block the wrong guy and gave running backs no chance.

When we had a TE on his side, we were able to run better. I don't know if it was him making the wrong read or bad coaching but he was not very good when it came to run blocking.

It's hard to evaluate how good/bad the RBs were when the run blocking was so bad.

This offensive line needs all it's pieces.

We had Huge uncertainties early with our OL. Mainly at left guard. Add a new @ RT that everyone is still complaining about. We do miss Tyron smith for sure but to discredit Zeke at this point has no leverage.

My favorite runs of his are when the OL breaks down and his knack to be able to pick up 3-4 yards. As for our situation rn, I would rather give rod smith more of the carries to de what he can do because we have seen Morrris run behind the same line that Zeke had to deal with to just come out losing yards more often than not.

So What you’re saying is the OL plays better with Zeke behind our line and that there is a big difference between our #1 back and his supplements.

With zeke out with suspension, we got to see Alfred, Rod, and DMC play. After watching that game, I really believe that R . smith is strictly a third stringer.
What did you all see in his 3 carries that makes you think he is strictly a 3rd stringer. No RB can be successful without some blocking. How many yards did Zek gain with no blocking vs Denver? I like Smith’s running style and think he can be successful with some decent blocking.

No. What I'm saying is L. Collins played bad against ATL. Some of the plays where L. Collins missed, Zeke would have gotten tackled for short gains too.

I looked at his 4 year career totals, but pretty much all the previous posts also summarize it

Can't tell for sure. I like Rod Smith's skill set, but he's never been a featured back, not even in college. At Ohio State he was stuck behind some guys named Carlos Hyde and Ezekiel Elliott, so he only got mop-up carries.

I see Smith being the #2 back next year since both Alfred Morris and Darren McFadden are free agents, but even then Dallas should hedge their bets with a mid-round draft pick.

In your post you said, “ after watching the game I think he is really a 3rd stringer”. If you are basing your decision off his career rushing totals understandable, though I disagree. From watching R. Smith in the preseason I think he can be successful with some blocking. Hopefully Sunday night he’ll get a chance to prove himself.

I see the posts about how stupid this team is not using McFadden.

I also saw this week both Linehan and Garrett admit they made a mistake at not giving the left tackle help to keep Dak upright and not broken like a Christmas Toy by New Years.

This makes me wonder if I was the only one to see those comments by Linehan and Garrett? Because if people here had seen them, then wouldn't suggesting the coaches are stupid just being redundant?

I think they should be playing McFadden or Smith and incorporate them into the passing game. Just don't run them straight into the back of the OL or the teeth of the defense. Lol.
McFadden has good hands coming out of the backfield. Give Smith some more carries he seems limited to me. The OL needs to be at their best also the line was very average against the Falcons.

I did...I've been watching him and understand he's a pet cat to some like Darius Jackson last year. Then I got curious and checked out his yardage stats and special teams tackle stats after some claimed he was a ST ace. So I actually did a little studying on him.

Hey it's ok if you like him. To each their own. But If im a betting man, I'd bet that he's not a feature back- hence my thread topic "is rod smith the answer". To me the answer is no. Backup. Yeah

I think that's a fair assessment.

Everybody's favorite back can do damage if we give them reps. Our coaches need to learn to ride the successful backs till THEY gasp for air or get repeatedly stuffed. We have 3 healthy rb's that want the ball.. Don't stop till they stop you....

The answer is simply to call running plays in the booth and to not audible into passing plays too often at the line of scrimmage.

Very few defenses will smother our running game for 4 qtrs if we stick with it. And very few defenses will smother our passing game if we're running passes with the benefit of the defense credibly believing very many of those plays will be runs. And opposing offenses find it harder to have their way with our defense when our offense is committing to the run and doing its best to hide our defense as long as possible on the sideline.
