This thread gave me the inspiration for this topic. I thought we'd dial in more on this particular issue.

Do you consider Stephen Jones what some describe as a "football guy"?

Some believe he is not because he was brought into the organization by his daddy.

I believe he is a football guy.

He has been in the NFL business since he was 23 years old. He's now 48. That is 25 years of NFL experience.

To me, I'd find it rather insulting if say, someone graduated from law school and got hired by their dad's practice, then 25 years later someone said they aren't a "law guy" because of nepotism.

My father has been in the car business for thirty-five years. If I graduated from college and joined his business, would people not consider me a "car guy" twenty years from now?

Stephen was most recently on Talkin' Cowboys and something he said really made me think. He said he was glad he went to school for Engineering because it made him good with numbers, and therefore he found the salary cap easy. He also said that "everyone in the NFL learned together" when the cap was implemented. In other words he was part of the NFL when the cap was put in place, and therefore on level footing with the rest of the league. If he wasn't a football guy then, he probably is after that, because he was in the same boat as everyone else. He also said it would be different for someone new to come in now, because everyone else already knows how the cap works.

Stephen Jones... finds the cap easy... hmmm... I'm looking at you, Adam.

Also, Risen Star need not respond. We know your answer. But you may if you wish. :D

It's been his entire life. If he doesn't know football, he doesn't know anything.

Please elaborate.

I think he means that Steven seems more cerebral than his dad. Jerry makes alot of decisions with his heart instead of his head (like giving older players new contracts when they really shouldnt).

Yes, I would say Stehen is a "football guy" it's not possible to be the son of Jerry Jones and not be a "football guy". I think Stephen has more say so with our favorite team than most of us know. I think some fans (not just boys fans but all NFL fans) think because Jerry holds the title of G.M (jerry is not a traditional GM) that he is an old stuburn guy that listens to no one. I think the Cowboys front office is just set up different than most teams. I don't know but I would venture to say the Cowboys scouts have more input than most teams scouts do. Jerry started out making his foutune in the oil business. (as we all know) So it's odvious he knows how to listen to people that know more about something than fans give him credit for. (be it oil or football ) I was not a fan of Jason being hired as the H.C, as recently as this draft even. I have done a 180 on Jason he is getting the right kind of guys in here. (team first players no more entitlement ) Give Jason another offseason and a good draft and this team will be competing for titles once again.
Rejoice Cowboy Fans this is a organization on the way up.

I'm not even sure what it means to be a football guy, to be honest.

Honestly I'm not entirely sure, either. Some kind of fraternity that no one can really define.

Football guys are probably leaders that generate chemistry, because of all of their intangibles.

Stephen is more of a football guy than John Mara will ever be.

A "football guy" is someone who adamantly believes that you can field an elite front 7 with a mediocre secondary and it will lead you to a championship.

Sounds like a lot of 49er fans I know. They acted like they won the Super Bowl after beating the Saints.

If you grow up in the Jones family, you are definitely a football guy.

I mean, look at the grandkid. He is at every game and was even in the war room and looks like he isn't out of middle school. That's crazy.

This is another debate like the 'elite QB' debate. Personally, a guy who manages or helps manage a football team for his career is obviously a football guy. If you use another definition of what a football guy is, he may not be. I'm don't think it matters. The guy's good at what he's doing. I don't really care how he got his shot.

He's a football guy in the sense that he was brought into the league by his dad, has remained in the league because of his dad and no other team in the league would hire him to be so much as a regional scout.

Apparently Mike Brown's a football guy too. So is Dan Snyder.

He's good at what he does? Where are the results? If he's so good why did they have to bring in Bill Parcells to clean up their mess?
