Is Terence Newman Still the Shutdown Corner He once Was

No one`s truly torched him, but he`s giving up a LOT more plays this year, and not just to number one receivers....

Again he`s not playing bad, but I just don`t see the Newman of 05-07 when no one dared throw to his side.

You'll never see that again for him - especially when Jenkins is on the other side. In 2007, it was hard to detect any decline because opposing QBs could pick on Nate Jones, Jacques Reeves and Anthony Henry.

We got rid of two of those three guys pretty quickly. I'm so happy to finally be rid of Henry and his yearly mid-season swoon.

I just think in 05-07 it was easier to go at Henry than it was Newman which led to teams targeting Henry alot more than Newman. I think now its become a pick your poison thing with Jenkins and Newman since both are good corners.

I am sorry but TNEW never was a real shutdown corner.

To me he is not having a bad year. He actually plays good in my opinion.

He always had problems especially with looking for the ball. He got beat on deep routes regulary because of it. With all of his athletcism he just never really developed a real feel for the CB position.

Right now hes getting alot of help over the top and with knowing that he started gambling a bit more. Bad thing is he loses on that gambles more often than he wins.

I don't really recall him getting beat all that often in his career, especially considering how much he was locked up 1-on-1 and how bad his safety help has been. The main criticism is that he is in position to make the INT but because he doesn't locate the ball he sometimes gives up the catch or more commonly just prevents the reception.

What's a shutdown guy? Because a shutdown guy never gets beat right? But I saw Revis get beat deep by Tedd Ginn this season. I'm not saying he's not a solid corner. Might be the best in the game. But I don't think there's a such thing as a "shut down corner" in this league.

Hard to be a shut-down corner anymore because of penalties such as illegal contact. The shut-down days were back when DBs were able to put their hands on receivers down the field without worry of a penalty.

No.....to answer the question.

He's made so many mental mistakes lately.

He's been getting beaten deep the last two years. Moss lit him up last year. He was one of the main culprits in us losing to Pitt. He was beaten deep against the Giants in our first game this season.

That was ONCE and that was it he has 35 passes defended leads the NFL.

That was in the first game before he got the torn muscle repaired.

In the rematch game he owned Moss and was a big reason why we won - he had a big INT against Moss in the 3rd quarter, I think, when it looked like the Skins were marching in for a go-ahead score.

His 2008 campaign was probably his worst as a Cowboy.

Newman has been one of my favorite players on this team since he's been here. The problem is fans forget how bad we were at that position before he came here. Also people thinks that a "shutdown" corner never gives up plays. Every corner give up plays. Newman at one point was top 5 DB's in the game, he's not as fast but id still say he is top 10 to 15. He has a really good game Saturday night. His biggest problem is that he really cant catch at all. lol

According to Pro Football Focus (which isn't necessarily 100 percent accurate), Newman has been targeted one less time than Jenkins this season and has allowed only 5.9 more yards per game despite playing 69 more snaps (about a full game's worth).

So no, Newman hasn't played like the shutdown corner he was a few years ago, but he's still playing very well (PFF ranks him ninth in coverage, with Jenkins ranked 17th).

And anyone who says Newman has never been a shutdown corner simply doesn't have a clue.

Wow thanks for that insightful info man! Very interesting indeed. Any stats on how many TD's he has allowed?

Newman has allowed four TDs this season, according to Pro Football Focus (again, not necessarily 100 percent accurate).

The reason some people think Newman hasn't played will this season is because he has allowed more costly catches than normal, and most of them have come despite pretty good coverage. Over the past four games, according to PFF, Jenkins has allowed twice as many catches as Newman, but because one of Newman's catches allowed was a TD and another was a long third-down conversion, some people think Newman has been getting beaten a lot lately. He hasn't, he's just a few costly catches that skew fans' perception.

TNew as a player has been anywhere from merely good to outstanding during his tenure here. My only concern has been some of the alleged locker room grumbling that may be happening behind the scene. In particular, I worry that he has some animosity towards Witten and Romo but I don't know if there is any legitimacy to that.

If he wasnt injured...

TNew is not a shut down corner at this point in his career, BUT, he is still playing at a high level. I don't know about anyone else, but I am much happier with two high level corners (with Jenkins flashing the potential to be more), as opposed to one shut down corner and a bunch of scrubs like we used to have when Newman was playing his best ball.
