It just seems to me that while he`s playing well, he doesn`t seem to be like the shutdown guy he once was

what do you guys think

I don't think cornerbacks start getting better once they pass 30.

Insightful, I know.

He's 31 but there's a difference between being a 30 year old 8 year pro and being a 31 year old 6 year pro. He has some years left in this league. Especially at the cornerback position where some guys play until their mid to late 30's.

I think Newman is having a solid year. Not many INT's but he's never been a INT guy. He's had better years but he's not embarassing himself out there. I'd still rather have him than 95% of the other corners in this league. Its just that Mike Jenkins is that good. We have a pretty good situation in the secondary IMO. Scandrick is back to being solid in the nickel role. Alan Ball has shown he can cover at both the safety and corner spot.

Some of those injuries might be taking a toll even though he doesn't have as much wear and tear as cornerbacks usually do at his age.

Maybe playing more man-to-man this season hasn't worked out as well as I thought it would for Newman, because he's certainly had better seasons. (Of course, he also had a better target for the opposition when Anthony Henry was here ... so maybe it's also a product of more throws going his way.)

I'm still trying to remember when he was a shutdown corner....oh yeah.....his senior year at Kansas State!

And against Steve Smith from Carolina.

He was never a shutdown guy - Derrell Revis is a shutdown guy, Deion was a lock , Woodson, Bailey , etc

Newman has had an overrated career.

He is not as good as he was from 2005-7 when he was one of the best in the business. He is still very good, though. He is an excellent complement to Mike Jenkins.

05 and 06 year were the definition of shutdown....He was always guarding the best receiver on the other team, and no one was having success against him..

I remember that 05 season, he was the only corner who shut down TO when he was ballin before his suspension....

When he has been as good as he has been for so many years and only made one Pro Bowl, I'd argue he is underrated. Look how hated he is among Cowboys fans even though his metrics argue that has been one of the best in the game since his arrival in the league.

Newman from 2005-2006 was an elite corner. 07-09 good-very good. It's all downhill from here

Just for arguments sake but what receiver has really torched him up this season? Maybe Vincent Jackson? That Brandon Marshall TD was ridiculous as well. But aside from a couple of plays I can't say he's been torched or any of our corners have been torched up other than Scandrick who's had some games where he's just looked lost.

It depends on the pace of the decline. I think he has been better this year than last year. The key is injuries - last year he wasn't healthy and the results weren't stellar. He's been okay this year but Father time is still ticking away on him.

I can see him being targeted more and more as Jenkins rep grows.

Next year might be his last
*ducks*

No one`s truly torched him, but he`s giving up a LOT more plays this year, and not just to number one receivers....

Again he`s not playing bad, but I just don`t see the Newman of 05-07 when no one dared throw to his side.

I am sorry but TNEW never was a real shutdown corner.

To me he is not having a bad year. He actually plays good in my opinion.

He always had problems especially with looking for the ball. He got beat on deep routes regulary because of it. With all of his athletcism he just never really developed a real feel for the CB position.

Right now hes getting alot of help over the top and with knowing that he started gambling a bit more. Bad thing is he loses on that gambles more often than he wins.

What's a shutdown guy? Because a shutdown guy never gets beat right? But I saw Revis get beat deep by Tedd Ginn this season. I'm not saying he's not a solid corner. Might be the best in the game. But I don't think there's a such thing as a "shut down corner" in this league.
