Good point. Since Coach Phillips is now the D-Coord too, it should be him making the final call. But with that said, even if he makes a proper call for the down and distance, if the DBs screw it up on the back end it's not really his fault. He can't be expected to micromanage every position on the defense to teach these guys technique. He needs to rely on his coaches for that and I don't think Campo was a Wade Phillips hire.

I personally believe Wade Phillips is a great Defensive coach but he has been hamstrung since he got here. That's not fair.

I think we need a new DB coach. No offense to Campo. In observing him, he appears to be a great guy with lots of respect from the team but he should be replaced by someone who could teach technique a little better.

Aside from us getting a sack or big-time pressure on the QB, whenever we get in 3rd and long situations I have little confidence in us getting a stop. This is especially clear in a hurry up or 2 min drill.

The corners and safeties appear to not have much of a clue how to play any kind of zone coverage effectively. In man coverage they are good but zone needs work. That's why we don't get many picks. It's like the DBs just watch the QB and disregard the player running right past them in their zone.

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought that when you are in zone coverage, you cover whoever comes into your zone and then pass him off when he leaves your zone. You trust the nickel back or the safety behind you and watch what develops in front. That way you can come up and make a sure tackle on a dump off.

Plus, someone needs to tell these guys that down and distance makes a difference when you're in coverage. If it's 3rd and 8, don't give up an 8 yard cushion. Cover your guy/zone and trust your pass rush. It doesn't hurt to study film either. The best DBs study tendencies and anticipate. It's like our secondary isn't being taught this.

I would have preferred hiring a guy like Dennis Thurman to be the DB coach, but Dave Campo taught good enough technique to help this team win 3 Super Bowls in the 90s.

Seems to me Pitt/Philly/Tenn/NYgspots/Arizona/Baltimore, etc.....aren't deeper in talent but have one thing going for them that our team doesn't: COACHING. Look at the coaches and staffs in those cities and then look at wade and co. Man, that's the difference to me: you get the most out of 2nd/3rd stringers by coaching them up. We don't have that capability right now. That's why the media is dissing our team. We have solid first teamers. But when they start to get dinged: and they will, what will happen then?

It looks like the NYG are having a very similar preseason to the Cowboys:
